The Majestic is surely the play house of Baxter Springs now. Last year the slogan was "Do Your Holiday Shopping Early." It bad its effect, and many folks took advantage of the sugges tion, thereby avoiding the rush later on. This year it is more important than ever that you do your shopping early if you want the choice selections, for people have got into the habit of buy ing early, and if you delay mak ing your selections the things you want may be gone. Do your shopping early. Pick- out what you want and have it laid away. Baxter Springs mer chants are receiving their holi day goods already. Damnable Condition. The bridge over Spring river just east of this city is in damna ble condition, to say the least. Where planks have worn through patches have been put on and it is impossible to dodge the patches. It is a shame and a disgrace, the condition the floor of this bridge is in. And the attention of the county commissioners is very respectfully called to the matter. Miss Zella Wright is visiting friends and relatives in Joplin. Last Saturday night the Jun iors and Seniors of the high school "pulled off" a very enjoya ble party in the basement of the high school building. The girl friends of the "Arib- tonian" Club gave a very success ful mask ball at the Majestic Friday night. They served a nice luncheon about lip. m. Fred SJtallsmith and Miss Clara Silence, two Toun'cr people for merly of this city, were married at Lead, South Dakota, on 1 burs day of last week. Both are in every way worthy of each other and the News extends congratu lations. The hill leading to the bridge on East River street is the worst piece of road between Cooper's store in Baxter Springs and the Connor hotel in Joplin. Just why it is allowed to remain in such a damnable, condition is hard to understand. But it should be put into decent condi tion before the weather gets bad. The road between the bridges east of town deeds some gravel on it right away. And inasmuch as the river is very low at pres ent, and gravel would be easy to get, would it not be a good dea to have the gravel put on? The river will not be low very long, and when it does come up it will be impossible to get gravel terhaps all winter. Now is the time to fix it. On the afternoon of October 25 the ladies of the W. C. T. U. or ganization were entertained by Mrs. E A. Haines at an informal luncheon. Mrs. Haines is a most delightful hostess and the after noon was choroughly enjoyed by all. The subject under discus sion was the "White Slave Traf fic. Several wonderfully inter esting papers were read by the following ladies: Mrs. S. B. Ap ple, Mrs. Beathon, Mrs. Eelsey, Mrs. John Jones, Mrs.' Frank Congdon and Mrs. Addie Vickers of Lowell. A general discussion followed the reading of the pa pers and all present strongly felt the crying need of arousing the public mind to a realization of the diabolical trap set for our in nocent American girlhood- and the urgent need of the most strin gent laws "to stamp out this most horrible traffic in human souls. Following the discussion, a deli dioi'S two-course lrncheon was J 4 11 . I 1. 1 Don't forget Saturday night's big show at Majestic. John Opperman, Geo. Peterson, Frank Hemstreet and Kelly Car michael returned last Saturday night from their fishing trip down on the Illinois river. They had a good time and caught slot of fish. Work on the foundation of Polster Bros.' new business house is about completed. Material is arriving rapidly, and work on the building is going to be hur ried. The building will be 75 x 100, all in one room. Lownev's candies criven away every Wednesday and Saturday nights at Majestic Mrs. Chas. L. Smith enter tained the Carnation Club on last Saturday afternoon. The prize was awarded to Mrs. F. P. Long. Mrs. Smith served the ladies a nice luncheon. Miss Nina Denison of Columbus was one of the guests. Show rain or shine, cold or wet, at Majestic. Always a warm house. Tom Cole is back at the Bax ter National Bank, doing his duties as cashier, after a lay-off for the purpose of taking a rest. The bank does not look natural with Tom gone. He spent a few days in Kansas City, where his wife and baby are visiting. Come on, boys; Jar loose and spend 10c, bring your girl and enjoy yourselves at the Majestic. Miss Nina Denison of Colunr bus was the guest of the family of Chas. L. Smith Saturday and Sunday. She came down Friday evening with Misses Swannie and Audrey Smith, who are attend ing the county high school. Miss Denison is one of the teachers in the high school. She is an old time Baxter girl, living here at one time. Wednesday and Saturday nights We Feature at the Majes tic. To the citizens of Baxter and vicinity: It has been the custom for several years for the mem bers of the G. A. R. and W. R. C. to serve voucher day dinners at the G. A. R. hall in this city, and this notice is for the purpose of explaining the object of such, and extending a cordial invita tion to all to patronize the same Friday, Nov. 4. A fine dinner will be served and the proceeds devoted wholly to assisting the unfortunate, ill and needy. As winter draws near there is much need of help, especially for old soldiers, who by reason of age or illness are unable to labor. Sol diers, help your comrades by having your vouchers filled out at G. A. R. hall. By Order of the Post. A big show at 3 o'clock Satur day at Majestic Theatre. Died, at . her home in Severy, Kansas, Wilma Opal, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Ferguson, born Jan. 15, 1910, died Oct 19, 1910, aged nine months and four days. It was a shock to the many relatives of little Wilma when the message was received announcing her death,, as she, with her mother, had been away from here only weekt having oeen here on a visit, leaving in apparent good health. . Funeral services were held in this city at the home of the grandfather, W. C. Black, conducted by Rev. Parbam, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Baxter csmetery. And Jesus said, "Suf fer little children to come onto Me, and forbid them not, for of sjcb is the kingdom of heaven' Those darling littl. feet now walk the ccurts of gold above; And that beloved voice now "oj Of Christ' redeeming love. Saturday of this week, Nov. 5tb, if you please, is Booster Day, and if the weather is good there is going to be a record breaking crowd in town. It is your duty to do all in your power to make the day a huge success from every point of view. The people are coming to Baxter Springs from all over the country on that day, and the town is going to be crowded. Make it a point, Mr. Business Man, to make your place attractive. Make your prices for that day attractive, too, for if you once get the people in the habit of coming to Baxter Springs they are going to keep it up. Past experience has proven that these Booster days are mighty gcod things. There are very few merchants who do not agree with this statement, and those who do not are those who disagree in or der to get out of paying any of the expenses. But those kind of fellows are found' in all walks of life. The knocker you have with you always, but you can very materially reduce the number by not paying attention to him. The best way in the world to whip a fellow is to not pay any atten tion to him. To the town people we want to make this suggestion. Buy early in the day Saturday, for later in the day the merchants are going to be busy with out-of town trade. By making your Saturday purchases earlier in the day you will be benefitting not ?nly yourself, but jouwill ac commodate your merchant by al lowing him a better chance to wait on his out-of-town trade. Almost Ready. Details Being Closed up Pre paratory to Building Elec tric Road. It will not be a great while, judging from the success the electric line people are meeting with, until work will begin on the electric road connecting up the towns of Galena, Columbus, Baxter Springs and Miami. De tails are now being worked out very rapidly, and it is thought that within a few days the peo ple will be taken into the confi dence of the company, and every- tbine made p ain to them. It is possible some assistance is going to be asked, not a great deal, however, and it will not be asked in the nature of a donation. The line is going to be built. Stick a pin here. Gas is Coming. The Real Kind, That Can be Used for Heating and Cooking. i Pipe and other materials for the gas company are arriving and work has commenced, in a way. It is thought the gas will be here in time to furnish fuel for the winter. Mr. Warner, connected with the company, told us Monday they will lay a mile of pipe a day, and if that is true they will be "going some." Will Jones is the local representative of the company, and ii you are going to want gas in your busi ness house or residence, please report to him right away so he can list you.
