Cog lizer, the agent, had with him the following: Mr. and Mrs. James Fallis of Joolin. Mr. and Mrs. Wi B. Fallis, son and daughter of Kansas City, M. h Zrnn of Pittsburg and E. S. Black well of Joplln. All go to buy and at San Juan and McAllen the best lands in the Rio Grande Vallev. James Fallis went down when Thompson and Rummel went in May, and bought land. W. N. Love has an adv. in this paper. Tom Lee's grocery stock is all new and fresh. Call phone 252 for anything in the grocery line. TheXadies of the Presbyterian chnrch will give a bake Satur day, Oct. 5, at Grace Perkins' Art store. The Ladies Aid of the Presby terian church will meet this (Thursday) afternoon at the home of Mrs. Sullivan. Notice to farmers having wheat to sell. This is to notify you, that we can not receive wheat at Baxter, testing under 57 pounds until further notice. Willard Bros. M. Duff has lost three head of horses lately, last week in fact. B. Welch also lost a good mare. The horses were not sick, but died in a few moments after lying down. Frank Brady, candidate for congress will be in Baxter Springs the same day the big A. H. T. A. doings will be held, and he will make a speech. If you want to see and bear the man who is go ing to get Phi, Campbell's scalp, come to town on that day. His speech will not be political that day, but you will have.the oppor tunity of meeting and talking with him, and you will like him, ' too. Certainly the present city ad - ministration is doing a lot of good work. A lot of good street cross ings are being 'put in, anda lot of other street work is beingctone. When the M. O..G. is completed a lot more street work will be necessary, especially on the streets which the M. 0. G. crosses. The grade of the .new road is away above some of the streets, and a lot of fills will have to be made. Then, too, very likely the city will order some nice new walks to the new depot, which, by the way, will be a very handsome building. The proposition to vote a lot of bonds down in Ottawa county 4 for the purpose or Dunging some twi r trpQ an A also for the buving of two toll bridges was voted on last Saturday ana aeieatea. ,toi a very full vote was polled, but the majoritv against the bonds was a couple of hundred. Afton and the south part of the county voted almost solidly against the bonds. The proposition would have carried, however, if it had not been for the knockers in the county seat town of Miami. Mi ami has some people within her borders that seem to lack sense than any town we know of. The building of a lot of bridges in Ottawa county would mean a great deal to Miami, but the hmmer club in that town was out in full force, and got in its work. DR. J. J. Will Apple was' up from Qua paw the fore part of the week to see his brother, Walter, who is ill. Walt Apple-is still a very sick man, his fever still being at a high stage. He has had fever for more than 30 days. All members of the "As You Like It" Club, who wish to enroll for another vear. will meet at the Library Oct. 7, at 2 p. m. The second cutting of hay is going to yt mighty light this year. The dry weather did not make a very heavy growth for second cutting. The Ladies Aid Society of the M. E. church will serve dinner on Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Has- kett. building, beginning at eleven o'clock. Everybody in vited. Mrs. John Hackwood and chil dren left Saturday night for Col orado, where Mr. Hackwood is engaged in mining. Mrs. Tom Hackwood accompanied them as far as Kansas City. Mrs. Hutrh Moore and chil dren of Union Springs, Ala., who havetaen visiting relatives and friends here for several weeks, have gone to Kansas City to vis it before returningirome. Governor Stubbs has refused to honor a requisition for Luther Grazier, who, it is alleged, made affidavit that the girl he married is18 years of age. The girl says she told Tuther she was 18 years of age. ' Wo have sold out an entire car of Weber Wagons in the past three weeks and another car is en route. After dinner at the New Smith, one of the party remarked that Miami just had to have a new hotel that the New Smith is just like a city hotel first class. 'of course, bad sloppy weather has not yet set in, but it will be fore long, and then people are going to appreciate the new walks and street crossings which the city administration has had put in. One week from next Saturday, or to be exact, Saturday, Oct. 12, the town of Baxter Springs will be filled to overflowing with members of the Anti-Horse Thief Association. No, they are not coming to plan the capture of a horse thief, neither are they go ing to hold a contention here. They are going to have a sort of reunion, coupled with a very in teresting program, and a big basket dinner. There will be contests of different kinds, speech making', drills, and a big parade. The committee having the matter in hand have worked hard, and assurances of a big crowd have been received. Hon. F. M. Brady of. Oswego will make a speech along A. H. T. A. lines, and Col. L. C. Hock er of Springvalley will also de liver an address. A list ayproximating 100 prizes will be given for different feat ures. The list will be published in these columns next week. ' There will be a tug of war, foot races, sack races, peanut races, and a big lot of the human race in Baxter Springs. Make your arrangements to be here, and you will have the time of your life.
