We recognize the necessity of giving to the city our best efforts to solve the many problems of vital interest to every citizen and taxpayer, with which we will have to deal, as officials, if elected. We also recognize that the affairs of the city cannot be suc cessfully administered by any one individual, no mat ter what his or her official position, and that it is necessary to have the co-operation of all depart ments and all officers of the city government and the confidence of the people if successful administration is to be accomplished. We also recognize the right of the people to be advised of the attitude of the candidates seeking election, on the problems with which they will be confronted as officials, if elected, and so we pledge ourselves to the following platform. Recognizing the necessity for good and efficient administration of the city's affairs, the candidates on the Democratic ticket, if elected, pledge the peo ple that they will unite and co-operate in promoting efficient, economical government, free from politics, and free from the dictation of any politician or group of politicians. Appointments shall be made only of such men and women as are capable, honest and willing to perform the duties of their respective posi tions, unhampered and without fear or favor. Two questions are outstanding in their importance to all the people—GAS and ELECTRICITY. Effi cient service and low price to the consumer should be the determining factor. The gas and electric properties belong to the people and we consider them competent to determine for themselves what shall be done—so much so, that what the people solemnly have declared, or may declare, by their votes, we will religiously follow. From this there will be no devia tion, no side-stepping. There is no candidate on the Democratic ticket bound in any way to any corpora tion or person, seeking public favors in these mat ters—we are not bound and gagged or committed to any proposition as attorney, agent, or employee. We are free to act without restraint to carry out the wishes of the people, and to this end we solemnly pledge ourselves to devote every effort to do as you declare. The law provides a method for all citizens to make their wishes known, to legislate for them selves by initiative or referendum election. What the people vote to do, we will do without reservation/ to the best of our ability. It makes no difference what the opinion of the individual office-holder ot candidate may be, the people will and should decide these questions themselves, and the officials are not only morally but legally bound to execute and carry out the decision of the people. WISEMAN, Vice Chairman The garbage and refuse collection and disposal shall be regular, thorough and sanitary, and in such a manner as to eliminate the open dump and the resultant obnoxious odors, to which the entire com munity has been subjected. The many miles of streets of our city shall be cleaned and kept in sanitary condition, so that they will no longer be unsightly and a breeding place for disease improvements of streets and sewers shall be made where needed and demanded by the resi dents, and the further improvement by the extension of gas, water and electricity for the convenience of the residents of the city shall be made wherever con ditions warrant. The Police and Fire Departments shall be in com petent hands, free from politics and politicians, and promotions therein to be by merit and fitness only. The law must be respected and enforced by all officers and employees of the city under penalty of removal, but the methods of enforcement should bei tempered with intelligence, having due regard and respect for the rights of our citizejjs and the sanc tity of their homes. The Health Department is one of the most impor tant branches of city government and we pledge our selves to remove the administration of this depart ment from politics and to make no appointments therein, except with the approval and recommenda tion of the Medical Society of the City of Hamilton, believing that our physicians and surgeons are com petent, public spirited citizens, vitally interested in the health of the people of the community, and will ing to give their time and assistance in carrying on this very important work. Parks and playgrounds for the children and adults afford the means of enjoying clean, wholesome, out of-door exercise and recreation, and are essential to the well being of our entire citizenship, as well as to the beautification of the city, and we pledge our selves to support a proper program for the enlarge ment and improvement of our park and playground system. Taxes, like death, are certain. Unfortunately, we cannot have orderly government without cost, which necessarily means taxation but the affairs of gov ernment can be conducted yrithout waste and the squandering of public funds, and we pledge ourselves to use every effort to reduce the taxes of the already over-burdened taxpayers, consistent with the rendi tion of public service. With this pledge on the part of the entire Demo cratic ticket, your vote and support is solicited. THE DEMOCRATIC CAMPAIGN COMMITTEE. "H. F. Beeler, Chairman.
