be a day of jubilee and triumph for the enemies of the United States, and the votaries of despotism— and oi gloom and mourning to the friends of man mini—all over tho world. As these essays are predicated on the dancer of a dissolution of the Union, and tho appearance of a determination to ofToct that unhallowed object, on tho part of some of the leading nullifycrs, it is no “t7- l8h°U d e8tab,isil those all-important ‘‘South Carolina is virtually absolved from *LL OBLIGATION TO THIS CONFEDERACY. Better that it conic now, than seventy years hence, when our trade shall have been destroyed— .our policy crumbled to ruins—our citizens ruinod— aud our spirits broken down by wrongs upon wrongs heaped up£u us, by a government, in tho hands of manufacturers, families, and abolitionists.” Loi. the legislature meet in the spring, and cither declare a separation from the urn on, or else declare the obnoxious laics a nullity, and fordii* obedience to them, in conformity with the sentiments of the country and according to their own repeated and most solonm pledges.”—Columbia Tellescope. “In proceeding to nullify, wo commit no act of aggression or usurpation!' Wo merely mildly de fend ourselves against one.”—Charleston Mercury. “There would not be, under any circumstances, a necessity for revolution. We can resist to ultimate extremity without it. A dissolution of tiie union DOES NOT NECESSARILY INVOLVE A REVOLUTION. TllC State of South Carolina, which, by a convention, acceded to it, can by a convention ceccdc from it. She contracted with her sister states upon certain conditions, and those conditions [boingj grossly and irremediably violated, it is her right fo abandon the union.”—Southern Times. “Resistance df. facto to the tyranny of Oon ci;r.sri—a right and a duty consecrated on the altar .of nur revolution. The best raij road to restore to dis commerce, confidence and safely.”—Toast bu R f rumbiiU. •“Suppose Charleston a frfe port, exacting no duties on entry or exit—or at the very utmost, five per cent, ad valorem, on imports—a free port, whore the vessels of every nation upon earth might bring, without let or hindrance, what they have to sell, and purchase fresly what we can supply! what a city would it he in fire years! what a depot for the transatlantic world! what a scene for com. mercial agency! And what nation would molest a free port, which is the port of every nation_ which all nations are deeply interested in promot ing and guaranteeing? And what other taxes do we need in that case, tharr tho same taxes w* now raise? And what danger have wo to fear? Who molests Lubec, Hamburgh, Bremen? Would Eu rope permit a free port to be blockaded? And where arc the taxes to be obtained, to pay the expenses of an hostile attack upon us by our nuou ilnm rFln«#lo7W “Resolved, that the governor of the state be in structed and required to protect the citizens ofthis stato from the unconstitutional control or oppres sion of all such laws as may be attempted to be enforced upon them from any and every foreign authority—Resolution offered to the Legislature of South Carolina by Mr. Wilson. “You arc oppressed, wrongfully, grievously, un constitutionally oppressed, beyond the toleration of any free people since the sun rose upon man in the enjoyment of his rights—and if it is your will to throw off this oppression, and to vindicate your li berties, rest upon no one man, or number of men, but rely upon yourselves for self .protection.”—Ad dress of R. II. Smith, Esq. to his constituents. “The crisis is by far the most important one that ever tried the institutions of our country. I believe they will go through it safe. But if they do not, 1 for one shall be for my native glorious little state, 'right or wrong.' And regardless of what Olliers may suggest, I shali. not be one of the first to sicken AT the sroiiT of BLOOD."—-Charles ton Mercury. “Answer me, \V hat is the issue now made up between our northern brethren and ourselves? Is it not an issue of life and death—of liberty and slavery? Turn not to your own revolution; for it must shame you: look back to the history of all past agds, and tell me when and where did that people ever live, possessed of the least pretension^ to civilized liberty, Wo have been goaded with such insults and such wrongs, nu-t Ul„ NOT spring to fHE CANNON’S MATCH AND TO TIJE IKmivct TO nr_ dress them?—Idem. “Tiif. memorable scenes of our revolution are to be ACTED Over again.”—Milledgeville Journal. 1 could till large volumes with matter of a siini ;lar seditious, I might say rebellious, tcndoncy, from the Charleston Mercury, the Columbia Telescope, the Southern Tim*s, &.c. Here we see the address, the zeal, the ardour, the industry employed to marshal the citizens of.the United .States in hostile array against oach other— “to let slip the dogs of wur”—to arm father against son—son against father—brother against brother_ to renew the horrors of the bloody scenes that took place during the revolutionary war, particularly in South Carolina and Georgia, where neighbors shot ■each other down, in the sanctuaries of their res pective houses, as remorselessly as they would dis patch so many tigers. Every description of per sons is appealed to, for the purpose of raising re cruits &n the crusade against the “tyranny of con ores?!” The friend of tranquility is allured by toothing strains, that nullification is not a war measure—that it can be effected peaceably, and it .would seem to be almost as simple a process as the repeal of a city ordinance. They arc assured that to nullify a kfpr of Congress is “no act of agress sion or usurpation”—that “there is no necessity for revolution”—and that “they can resist to ulti mate extremity without it!*' Ihe ardent friends of liberty are aroused by the assurance that “they are grievously, wrongfully, unconstitutionally oppressed,” and beyond any thing ever endured by any civilized nation; but the declaiincrs do not detail what those terrible op pressions are. Those who aspire for fnnro '"alJhs. .cannon's mouth,'' aro called upon .'.'to renew the scenes"—the bloody scenes "of the revolution!" And, finally, the votaries .-of Mammon are to be al lured by the extension of tradc.and commerce_>l!us brilliant advantages of making Charleston "a free port f err every nation upon earth" to resort to for the disposal of what they have to sell; and for the pur ©hasoof what they want! It in not, therefore, wonderful that, with .so much industry, so incessantly employed, a -daap impression has been made, and that so many of your citizens aro prepared for any extremity,* But let me repeat once more—and "as if an an gel spoke, I feel the solemn sound"—Nullification is synonimou* with war—and the worst of all wars, a civil war, in which man too often plays tho part of a demon incarnate.— “W^hen after batttle I the field have seen, spread o’er with ghastly shapes, which onto.were men; A nation crush'd! a nation of the brave! A realm of death! and on this side the grave! Are there, said I, who from this sad survey, This human ehnod, carry smiles away? _ How did my heart with indignation rise! How honest nature swell’d into my eyes! How was I Shock’d, to think the hero’s trade ‘•*}f such materials, farm and triumph made!”— You no. HAMILTON. * for three or four .years,- talents of the first or der, and some of the most influential presses in South-Carolina and fieorgia, and one or two in Virginia, have been employed in misrepresenting tho tariff, and rendering it its advocates odious. During all this period, the friends of that moa sure even those whose fortunes depend on it, hero and elsewhere, have, with flight exceptions, shrunk from any attempt at its vindication in those sections of the union. Jew- instances have ever occurred, of a greater destitution of sound policy or public spirit. Had those persons done their duty, the southern effervescence weuld never have risen to its present dangerous height. Should any fatal result taka place, the responsibility will rest almost altogether on them—and they will have a fair claim to the re. probation of posterity. It is delightful,’on the other hand, to record that the union lias, in the soutli .ern states, been nobly defended by citizens who ab hor tho tariff almost as much as Dr. Cooper or Mr. Hamilton; hut great, as arc their objections to the tariff, they more strongl y object to disunion and civil war. rhiladclphw, June 30,2831.
