eleven million dollars a year for watches.
Ten dollars is the rate of a cabin
passage from Charleston to Sew York
in a first class steamer. Before the war
it was twenty-five dollars.
A negro recently refused to take the
oath as postmaster at Forest depot, Vir

The special committee of the board

in the county of Sterling, Scotland, in

Hunday was a lovely day and the ge
nlal sunshine was taken advantage of
by our lair ladies. They were out in
force and many of them during the day
visited the peerless packet Bobt. K. le
now lying at our wharf-curiosity seems
unabated and every visit only brings to
view some new beauty not seen before.
A light rain on Monday morning, early,
with a cloudy atmosphere indicated an
unpleasant day, but except that the sun
did not shine, it war pleasant enough

There is no better evidence of the giant
strides the world is making in every di
rection, in works of internal improve
ment, than the comparative little atten
lion the above announcement, which
came to us a few days ago by the cable,
bas attracted. The waters of the Med
iterranean and the Bed sea are now
united. The historical caravan has been
disbanded, aud the patient camel has
been stripped of his burden and turned
out to grass.
Navigation was open to Rock Island
on Uie ftlh. The Southern Belle and
Savannah arrived thereon that day from
lielow. We have no doubt but that it is
now opeu to the foot of Lake Pepin.

A fight took place at the lower end of
the landing, between a white man and
a voter. The latter came out first lest
aud the latter went home the worse for
wear.
The J. D. IVrry was taken to the
lower landing yesterday, where she Will

The Southerner is to be sold to-motrow
by the I'nited State marshal.
Capt. Hob Gibson, of the City wharf
boat, left for a short visit to Alabama on
uuday evening. He will luxuriate,

Capt Sam. Shock bas been appointed
passenger agent of the Memphis and
Charleston railroad.
Items were very scarce on the creek
yesterday. After a diligent search of
several hours, we came away tired, but
had nothing worth layiug before our
readers.
We noticed several well known steam
boatmen at the grand opening given by
our cotruiporary, the Avalanche, on
Saturday night last, in honor of the new
building. Speeches were made, toasts
were drank aad a general good time was
indulged in. A prominent passenger
agent made a speech, which we will give
in full iu a day or two.
The Commercial brought 29" bales of
cotton from White river.
The M. S. Mepham will leave the Star
wharfboal for New Orleans to-day at 5
p.m. Capt. Woods commands. W.Jay
Johnson, agent.
The City of Alton, Capt. McPbeeters,
will leave for Cairo and St. Louis on

The new steamer Richmond will be in
port on Wednesday or Thursday next,
when our people will have another
