y regret vo notice mat some of our
country exeb&ngea have lately frequently
misquoted the cotton market of this city,
by mistake, we make bo doubt, but with
results to Memphis that are none the less
disastrous. A case in poin t k that of the
Hickman (Ky.) Courier of Saturday last
In that paper we find middling cotton
quoted as selling la Memphis, on the 14th
Inst., at w hea In fact It sold at 29s.,
and within a Balf a cent of the New
York rates, quoted in our paper of that
uateataBje. buefa mistakes as these lead
to grat coaftHien, very often excite dis
trust, and should be guarded against with
the utmost oare by the publishers of pa
pers in tae country. To this end we call
public attention to the error.
A reason for tbe call of the militia by
our ataie authorities, it has been suc-
tested, b togive a certain " ring " in New
ioik. an opportunity of reeliz-ns from
the panic that will ensue as to our State
steaks in that market. The " fuss and

The friends of the Sau Bias Pacific
JtaUroad have been iadustrlously st
wori. wun uongreee. It is expected that
today the Committee on Pacific Rail
roads cf the House will report a bill
granting a lean of $16,000 per mile for it,
the line to be known &3 the Southern
Pacific and JopammaEca at Cairo to
Little Roek, Austin, Saa Antonio and
across Mexieo toan Bias. The report
will show that this Is by SOO miles the
shortest route to the Pacific O jean, and
that while the whole route from New
York to San Bias i8 2309 mjieej it only
requires the buliditig 0f lefs than one
thousand milesof road to complete a rail
road connection. Toe Mexican grant for
that one portion of the road from the Rio
Grandoto San Bias is a moat liberal one
while the grant jnU made by the Texas
Convention embraces all tbe public lands
for twenty miles on earn side of the road
from the Ktd'rlvar to the Rio Grande,
provided that portion of the road shall
be comefletsd wltbinlx years from the
date of tbf'grant. Therepa't will also
refer.to the Immense prospective com
meroa with Mexico.
PKCtSISO JieSAXQS.
We have lately had much to say upon
a pleaslog theme the general prosperity
of the South. This morning we propose
that ottaete equally oompetaat, ahaU be
heard on the same mbjeo. First we
quote the New York Herald, which re
cently, in 1(8 " money article," said :
Forty or llfty millions of dollars have
gone South, aad have been, or will be,
aoeorbed thigrci 1 he How cf currency in
Uit direction, at Hie present time, is
Mill gnimr on, but on a diminished scale.
M will go hi the spring is tbe shar 0
of Northern capital, which, under the
temptation of the high price of cot too,
ieaeeUiu investment there. Emigra
tion has set Jh, nd there will be a strong
current in the spring. The revival of
ootton culture Is a feVer juat now Uh
capitalie's.
The Mobile (Ala.) Register and the
Sehna (Ala ) Times says :
"We do not believe there was ever, be
fore tbe war even, as much sorpioi mo
wy fn Alabuma as there wffl he When
the crop of lii9t yesr shall have been die
posed 0'.
The New York correspondent of the
New Orleans JHcayune, in a recently
published letter, says :
There is just now a -large demand for
tbe xeourities of tbe Southern States
haoed on the prospective improved con
dition of those States, and prices are
dally hardening. There is also more
disposition to put capital into dooMtern
laaifo, the present high rates for notUm
being a great stimulus in this direction,
and for several months to eotne green
backs will be llowlag tfeitber.
The Waahingfc-i correspondent of the
New York Journal of Commerce gives
tbe following statements in relation to
tbe Scuth :
Kvldenca abounds that Northern capi
tal ir) seeking ac outlet in the boiun
Mnv persons nass through here every
week on their way southward to look for
hinds, and at other nuettiess enterprise?.
The opportunities for investing in lanh
in that part of t'-ie country are excellent.
There ie mucii greater willingness by
owners to sell, both to i.iorthm men,
and to the laboring population aim. Mil
lioas of acres of good land can bs pur
chased now at small prices. Planters
find that with a smaller number of acres
and mnre thorough cultivation, they do
better than was the oaee in the old slov
enly stvle. Manufacturing enterprises
are projected, and mining will be enter
ed into vjgorousjy in many rcuooa
where nothing of that sort has ever been
done.
The New York Mercantile Journal
says:
Attention in teraiag to the interior
trade of the country, aad the people am
directing their energies to agrtontteral
productions. We have already more
than once of late referred to the flittering
prospects of the cotton oroDof the South.
Mr. Nkakdrr Ricr, of Florence, Ala ,
in a letter to the Florence Journal of
Saturday, sys :
I have received several lelteea from
Northern gentlemen, and besides, have
seen several more that have been written
to ethers ef my aequaiutaneee ; ail tfaeee
letters relate to the same t jeets, v z. : as
to the chances of getting farms in this
section, the price of land, the state of so
ciety, heaith of the country, its pioduc's,
and how Northern men would be treated,
etc.
And the Water Valley (Mise.) Eagle of
Saturday saye :
Cotton factories are getting to be " all
tlw rage " in Mississippi, and tbrougbeut
tbe Southwest. We bear of new mi. 'Is
completed, or new companies of stock
heiden organiaing to ga.iate tbe ex
tremely profitable business of manufac
turing " our great -staple" every day.
V- hardly tae up a Southern paper
without seeing a new notice of something
of tbe sort. If not a cotton faeforr, it is
some new and much needed railroad
that is to be built.
This is enough for one dy. We will
produce other evidence? shortly.
In the Federal Court at Knoxvlilc, be

would relieve the noble Kentuckian of
