Trauatioiik in Weateiu piodux were THE MEMPHIS DAILY limited, and sale of feed and breadstuff were lighter than expected. Several merchants arrived here from Arkansas on Monday, and proceeded east ward to purchase goods. They report traveling agents from distant cities have numerously swarmed their country throughout the season, and have secured a large trade that could have been drawn to us, if our merchants had visited them during the summer months and exhibited the same energv displayed by rival cities. They reported having examined stocks here and were satisfied that purchases could be made at rates as favorable as elsewhere, but having received flavors 'from other cities they determined to buy exchange here, go on and settle obliga tions, and while absent lay in theirslocka. 1 1 soems st range indeed that our trades men will thus stand in their own light, and permit rival cities to aend out run ners and secure business to which they are not entitled. While hundreds of agents have moved around us in all directions, even to with in twenty-five miles of onr city limits, but few of our own merchants have gone into the country during the dull months. We do not approve of this traveling agen cy business, believing that wherever prac ticed goods are sold at an advance to make up tor the extra expense incurred. Trav eling agents are proverbial for lavish ex penditures, and houses employiag them must make it up some how. Where it Is In vogue, however, something must be done as an offset, and few Memphis mer chants have beeu so busy during the past three months but that they could have made excursions into the interior to see customers, eatend acquaintances, and by becoming their own drummers saved expenses and competed with their rivals. The drumming system could be easily hrought to grief in this way. The enemy should lie met with their own weapons, and their game stopped. New cotton continues to come in quite t'riskly, and ia taken up as fsst as it ar rives, leaving the market bare, ss the de mand exceeds the supply, and orders in the hands of brokers remain unfilled. The season will be well advanced before there is a surplus for foreign export. The lmpresaion is genera! that estimates of the maturing crop, like last year, are far above the actual yield, and that 2,500,000 lialee will ls fully aa much as the crop will sum up. I'nfavorable news from the uplands and along the Miseissijpi are the causes assigned for the lessened yield. Much of the reported stock of lifi bales here is not merchantable, some forty bales l eing sunk cotton that must be over hauled at the pickeries la-fore it will lie fit for jnarket. It is a singular current of trau to hud manu fotturers purchasing their Tw"n pi acts, and indicates a possible future advance. Much of the flour now moving from St. Louis is being shipped to the New Orleans market, where the demand ia greatest. The libera! premiums offered b' tin Board of Tobacco Trade, together with that to be given by llie Agricultural vsso clation is considerably talked of, and will induce growers to send something hand sotne to the October Fair.
