THE MEMPHIS DAILY APPEAL -AVEDXKSDA Y. DECEMBEE 15, 1809.
I FINANCE AND TRADE. FINANCE. Office of thk lm Appeal, 1 Memphis. December H. 1W. 1 The meeting of bond holder of tlie State of Tennessee, which cjjne off on Saturday in New York, was larfrely attended, and J. J. Donaldson. President of the Bank of North America, was made President. Mr. K. P. James stated that he had just re turned from Tennessee: that the debt of the State was about $K',,OUO, of which $30,000,JOO were issued to railroads, and only one-half of these could pay on de mand. Mr. Conklin, President ofthe In ternational Insurance Company, corrob orated Mr. James" statement, and stated that the railroads of Tennessee actually cost 64,tiO0,00O. It was proposed to ap point a Commissioner to go to Tennessee and endeavor to induce the Legislature to place the the defaulting railroads in the hands of a Commissioner for the benefit of bondholders. We have no change lor the better to note in our money market. Currency is scarce, and small biils are particularly so. The demand for exchange is steady, and rates, both buying and selling, are gener allv unchanged. Cotton bills are taken at 3-2 discount. Checking at H discount. City Scrip is in some demand by tax payers, but only in a little way, and prices are weak. Dealers buy at SOfj-SJc; sell ing at s-i.sdc. The law removing the penalty from j.roperiv heretofore sold by the State for the nou-parnieni of taxes having passed, will enable ery many of our citizens to r.-,.'' . their property sold during and since the war. and will no doubt cause some increase in the demand for County Warrants, very few of which are offering. Dealers bid 6." to 68c, and sell at 70c. Tennessee money is nominal at 60c Tennessee Bonds are generally steady, bnt sJ-me decline is reported in New, ales of vhich took place in New York to-dav at 42 V'; Old held at O0V-, with Ml bid. Another tendency of tlie warm weather j is to increase the hog crop. Orowers find it profitable to continue feeding during ' the mild days, as the hogs fatten more i rapidly anil with less corn than during a , severe cold;term. Thus millions of pounds may be added to the meat product for 1 everv week of the present mild weather. The hog packing in the West, as coni ' pared with last year, is as follows: To Saturday Morning.
