1 - THE MEMPHIS DAILY APPEAL- WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 29, 18H9. r A : ft FINANCE AND TRADE. lOUMK Officb of thb I'aily Appeal, ) Mrmphis. December 28. 1869. The Money market to-day was a coun terpart of yesterday, and rau are gen erally unchanged. In one or two inxtan cea Kxchange was scarce, but the best rate offered was discount on cotton bilit. though Bank Exchange would probably hare been taken at a fraction less. The checking rate ranged from par to discount, hut only undi peculiar circumstances would the latter rate be conceded to with regular customers, for instance. In Stocks or Bonds there is no move ment of any kind. While money is suffi ciently easy to move cotton, it is not enough so to permit oi speculation, and all kinds of securities may be considered nominal. There is no demand for City Scrip to speak of. An occasional taxpayer puts in an appearance, but does not s- eui at all anxious to buy at 7677, the selling rate from dealers. Small amounts offered at the counter are taken at 7-($74c. County Warrant are in demand at 70c, buying, with few offering. Dealers sell at 7A7.x". The holidays are never partic larly noted for animation. : .: he two i.r three weeks prect-eding are generally the bubiest of the year. People prefer pending the week between Christmas and : i- New Year at home at their own fire sides, and this year is no exception to the rule. There was no packet from above since our last, and prices are steady on all taple goods, with some improvement poa-ibly on bulk meats. A lste St. Iouis provision circular says: '"The probabili ties are lhat the receipts in January and February of this year will be much larger than last year, as the reports from the country aay feeding is rapidly progress ing. The receipts of hogs last year in creased gradually from the 1st of March until during the middle of June, they ranged from 30,000 to 60,0n0 per week. The whole number received from the 1st of March to the 1st of October was 842. V67 htad. We fully expect that the re ceipts this year throt gh the summer will lie much heavier than last, as most intel ligent drovers report they have never knowu so many joung hogs through the oonntry as there are at present, and far mers never bsd so great an inducement to feed ibetn. Several parties at the pres ent time are estimating the probable ex tent of the packing, but estimates Just now are all moon-shine.' To prove how xery reliable t bey must be, the "stlraatee of two authorities differ nearly 3ii,000 bead. We have no desire to risk our rep utation on any surmises. Packing will continue as long as hogs can be found, and the probability is that before the aeason closes packers will be murb more tired of paving for, than the farmers of furnishing them. The foreign demand hardly amounts to anything, and will scarcely be increased at present prices. Toe probabilities are it will be supplied almost exclusively from spring and sum mer hog."
