The Nashville Banner of Thursday says: This morning a commission of United States officers will cenvene in Nashville for the purpose of examining into the frauds which it Is alleged have been prac ticed by claim ageuts in collectintr the bounty and back pay of colored soldiers. A fearful cry has gone up from this Stare of swindling, and there is no doubt but that hundreds of thousands of dollars have been pocketed by claim agents and others through glaring frauds. A great deal has been written to Washington about the matter, and the complaints have U-.'ii Wind And rieen. Now. at last. Ditson fc Co., of Boston, have in prepa ration the " Passion Music " of Sebastian Bach, in compliance wi;h the growing love of and demand for the classical music of Germany and Italy, which is beginning to be very decidedly felt in the American cities, which, are large enough to possess eit her a foreign or native cul tivated musical atmospnere. This publi cation ill cost the sum of three thousand dollars, and irives convincing proof of the i taste of the people; and another striking evidence of musical culture is given by the "Church Music Society," which has subscribed eight thousand" dollars that three concerts of ancient and modern classical music may be properly and skill fully given. Publications of a high char acter, but inexpensive in style, are be- ming daily more popular, and the Boosey collection of Mendelssohn. Bee thoven, Mozart, etc.. is doing much to familliariz? the public with the beauties ot that pure and pathetic school which finds such true interpreters in pianists like Liszt, or orchestras like that c.f Theo dore Thomas a school which is so full of beauty and tenderness that all who are once fairly involved in its subtle dreamy harmonies become unfitted to enjoy any thing more florid. Threatened Impeachment of an Honest Judge by a Radical Congress. The Norfolk Virginian hits the following reference to the movement of the Radical Congressmen from this State for the remo val of Judge Trigg: " Judges of the Courts of the United States are to sit under a sword suspended i liyahair. Over their heads a cloud is to hover, charged with the lightnings of swift : impeachment, to be flashed at the moment i a constitutional minister of juaiice, on bis : judgment seat, speak a word which de tracts from the high pretensions of the 1 controlling spirits of Congress. Not only is mis fcuw ouiy grouuu, oui it is so clear for making a decision that he could not help making, if he had been base enough to try, that in the very case the most par tisan and the least learned of the Judges of the Supreme Court, Justice Swayne, who was very desirous to have the party tried by the military, backed out from the case, left the bench in the midst of the trial, compelling Jvidse Trigg to try it alone, and could not be persuaded by all the influence that could be brought to bear to return to the case." Appeal Office, Jan. 1 8 p.m. In obedience to time-honored custom, our banks woro all closed to-d;;y, and the general markets were without animation. The orders received per steamers of Thurs day and Friday had to be filled and shipped, but outside of this there was nothing done. The weather has under gone a change, and snow fell nearly all day, putting a stop to any symptoms of local trade, and by now, nearly, if not all, of our retail houses have closed their doors. The dav being observed as a holiday everywhere, the absence of eastern ad vices, the weather and the utter impossi bility of handling cotton caused a total suspension almost in operations in the staple, and in a eommercial way the first dav of the new year was a very quiet one. The negroes had some sort of a parade yesterday. It has been so long since we have seen any demonstrations of the sort, that the sight was quite novel. With the most careful proof-reading, typographical errors are almost unavoid able, lu our carriers' New Year's Ad dress there are one or two, which, though easily seen, were somehow overlooked by us. A negro mackerel bearing the high faiutin and aristocratic name of Singleton Howard, stole a hat from Mr. Jaiesko's shop, on Main street, yesterday evening. He was seen and pursued by oIHcer Kuliii holz, who overhauled him and locked him up. Messrs. Allen Bros., the popular pro prietors of the popular Commercial Hotel, set a holiday dinner for their guests yes terday. The bill of fare was one to tickle the palate of any gourmand, and the din ner was relished hugely by 1 who par took of it. The snow, though it melted on touch ing the earth, was sufficiently heavy, and the atmosphere sufficiently cold, for it to remain in considerable quantities on some roofs, and to cover the trees in the park and suburbs with a beautiful mantle of white. Tho eflect was very "winterish," and reminded one ot a more Northern climate. The condition of the banquette on the west side of Second street, from the Greenlaw Opera House to Gayoso street, is a disgrace to the property "owners, an insult to the Board of Aldermen, and a : nuisance to the public. The Board, two weeks ago, ordered the property owners to put down a brick sidewalk there, but up to this time nothing has been done to ward it. New Year's Day was pretty generally kept "holiday." In the afternoon, after the snow ceased, the streets were quite full of people mostly gentlemen. "Call ing" was the order of the day, and almost every family "received." We are happy to state that -here were comparatively very few gentlemen with "bricks in their hats" after making tneir rounds owing, prooaoiy, to me nci ium a a geuerai itiiim wines ana uqaora were taboood from the collation tables. Prof. A. Smith, leader of the Old Memphis Cornet Hjind. was presented yesterdav with a silver " E flat" cornet, worth 2)0. This beautiful and valuable instrument was the gift of the band, and I was presented with a neat anu Dentting ; address by Mr. John L. Eichberg, and , was received by the worthy professor In ! his usual happy style. After the present i ation, the band visited the various news- uaner offices aud serenaded them. We ments in the band, played by Mr. R. H. Hood. It Is a kind of tuba, and is said to be the only one In America, having been but recently imported. The band is com posed of ten pieces, played by A. Smith, i leader; F. Arnold, John Hood, J. Gareiss, John Saxby, W. S. Brooks, R. H. Hood, Win. Wynne, Wm. Wendoth and (.'has. ! Mack. It is needless to say to Mom- ! phians that they make good music. Mr. T. W. O'Donnell was awarded the j magnificent punch-bowl voted for at St. Peter's Orphans' Fair, last night, by the following oanot: O'Donnell 52 Duffy 10 "Tom" always comes out ahead when the decision is" left to the ballot-box. We learn from the very best authori ty that a caucus was called at an office on Main street, on Friday morning at ten o'clock, at which Col. Sam. P. Walker and Mr. II. J. Lynn, and their friends were to be present, and there decide which of the two should be chosen as the man to unitqlhe mongrel votxand beat the Dem ocratic nominee ' fiftnen hundred votes." From the name at the bead of the "official organ," Col. Walker seems to have been I the strongest. We did not learn whether Tom Hamilton or Burdett were present or not. I hey ought certainly to have been there. One of the most beautiful Christmas giftB, of the presentation of which we have heard, was one given to Mrs. Geo. Keller by her husband. It is a square grand piano, made by Knabe, of Balti more, and is a most magnificent instru ment, not only in finish but in tone and power. This is a most appropriate gift to a lady whose musical talent, the high or der of which is too well known in this city to need commendation, has never been wanting when charity called upon her to assist in the benevolent musical entertainments for which our city is fa mous. Long may she enjoy the "posses sion of a talent that is the charm of the home circle and the delight of her friends and the public. Immense arrival of new (foods.
