Statement of the Subscriptions, Bond Issues and Sales, Expenses and Cost of General Manage ment Etc. Editors Appeal I notice in the Holly Springs Reporter, at Thursday last, an article upon the management of the Selma, Marion and Memphis railroad, in which It states: First We have lost confidence in the man agement of the road. Second We do not believe judging from the past, that it possesses the ability to con duct the enterprise suoce&sf ully. Third We believe tho true remedy Is to have a change, which can be effected by the retirement of the present and the election of an entire new management. Now, Messrs. Editors, I am opposed to laying my grievances before the people through the public press; but so much has been said by the papers and private individuals In regard to the building of this road and Its manage ment by me as president, I feel that my silence any long would be injurious to the road, as wen aa myseu. x mereiore piopose to give a plain statement of facts as to what has and has not been done by myself and the com munity at large, and hope that every reader will give It a careful consideration. IN1S68, Colonel H. W. Walton, A. C Withers, and others of Holly Springy, had the charter of mis reviseu, ana- insisiea mat x snouiu go to work and secure a subscription sufficient to organize the company, which required $300,000. Limrence Barrett an " King Lear." We are almost persuaded that Barrett kept the best part of him for last night. Acknowledging the great excellence of his let," we feel safe in acknowledging his " Lear " beyond all praise In words the best character in his repertoire. To say that he played It last night with all the perfection of his artistic nature, that he brought to its portrayal the nice distinctions of a thoroughly studied effort, and that in make-up and the preservation to tue close of his assumption of garrulous, suffering and enduring old age, he was ail that he ought to be, is scarcely to say all that might be said, did we have time and space to indulge ourselves as'we are prompted. From his appearance on .the throne In the first act, to his death beside the dead "Cordelia" In the last, the audience listened and looked with almost breath less Interest, an Interest the Intensity of which was only broken i'v the fall of the curtain. Then the feels: excited by the splendid performance fou .d free vent in warm applause and calls to t :e front, which were responded to promptly by Mr. Barrett, who bowed his thanks. Follow ing the play, which, as given last night, dif fers essentially from the text of Shakespeare, eliminated of much that- Is objectionable, and that Is yet no worse than much that was given, that could not be eliminated, we have five acts laden with interest, in which all the caste find enough to do, but most of which, by far the largest part, de volves upon Mr. Barrett and Mr. Lang, the one as "Lear, the other as "Edgar" and "Poor Tom." Commanding as it did the full (tow er of the company, testing it) strength to the last man and woman, tue characters be ing generally well sustained by them, we can but single out for special mention beside the great artist, Miss Louise Hawthorne and Mr. Lang. The character of "Lear" differs widely room any other of Shakespeare's creations. It was called into existence to lead In the elaboration of the idea that there was no poison or canker in nature equal to that of the Ingratitude of a too-lndulgea child to a too fond parent. We have this lesson, not merely j la the case oi "Regan" and "Gonerll," but also ' In the case made up for "Edgar" by his base- j born brother. "Edmund." who accuses him to his father, "Gloster," of having plotted bis murder, In order to secure the parental possessions, which the wretch asserted were to be divided with him. In the meantime I vis ited New York and contracted an nhsnlntn sale of the bonds on the one hundred and ten miles m Aiaoama at si(s,uwper mile, at vjy. cents on the dollar. Tlio first S320.0C0 of bonds on twenty miles of road were to be delivered by the last day of September, 1863, which re quired a much larger lorce and more expense than would have been ordinarily necessary to procure the signature of the governor. THE BONDS were delivered as per contract, but the finan cial crisis in New York prevented the parties from taking any of them, which left me to provide S75.00U. which 1 had borrnwprt. Affor this. I again contracted for the sale of the Alabama Indorsed bonds, nt 82)4 cents, to a German house in Europe, who took and paid for 522.000. When I was direct d hv thn hnanl of directors to push the work to Eutaw, a dis- "uito m uuri-eigui. nines, xne tranco- Prnssinn war limknmit. nhAnr tHlo tlmA n.. prevented the German bouse from taking any more of the bonds. The Alabama and Chattanooga railroad becoming involved in trouble has prevented the sale nf of our bonds. Having to suspend thtf work In Alabama, after completing fifty miles of road, and spending KS0.000 on thn Wn river bridge, which left us with a floating debt of about 575,000 on that end of the road, which has been paid off by the earn! ties of Hint, onrt of the road, except about $ll,0C0, although the luiwu uxup ui uc-cji luiuust, a lauure lor the last two years In that section of the country. THE RUNNING EXPENSE of that end of the road Is less than fifty per cent, of the receipts, which Is less than any road in tho State or Alabama. These arc a few of tho many difficulties I have had to contend with. In obtaining county and to wn subscrip tions, x nad to encounter manv and snrinii difficulties, many persons objecting to tho buuscriiitiun, utners Becoming aisneartcned from tho s:ow progress of the road, whilst there have been others, from pecuniary mo tives, trying to depreciate the bonds for the purposo of purchasing at low figures. The county aud commissioner courts, in most of the counties, having refused to levy the tax to meet the interest on the bonds subscribed to the road, most of them looking to repudiation if It were possible to do so, and most of them throwing obstacles In the way by Insisting that the amount of their subscription should be spent in their counties, havo prevented me from com mencing on either end of the road and work ing successfully as I wlshedUo do. AS TO SHELBY COUNTY nnd the road from here to Holly Springs, I hardly feel It Is neccessary to allnde to It, as so much has already been said through the paper, but will state that over 5200,0O have already been spent for grading, bridging, eta, which is fast washing away for the want of attention, onugingana orossues rotting; and If the citizens or Memphis do not feel a suffi cient Interest to come to tho relief of the road, it will continue to do so. The Holly Springs -Wfporter speaks of anew election and a new president. I will here state, as I stated at our List two annual elections: I do not want the presidency, and would prerer some other person as president, provided he can raise money and credit to complete the road from Memphis to Holly Springs, and from Selma to Eutaw, as I havo failed to satisfy my self, and I presume others, and as some of the stockholders have been unkind enough to misrepresent me through the press and other wise. I have refrained from maklngany pub lication for the reason that my enemies havo often repeated that I was attempting to force measures through by brow-beating my oppo nents. All of such charges I denouuep as un true and without any foundation. Speak ing of NEJV DIRECTORS, I would advise tho Holly Springs Heportcr to go over the lino of the road, as well as visit Memphis, and got up a subscription. In order that he may procure stockholders who will be ease and grace as to force from the audience, in compliment to both repeti tions of unbounded applause. It was a trying scene to audience as well as actors, almost palnlully prolonged. The variations of pathos and reflection, his great sorrow ob truding to overcast and finally obscure his mind, helped to Its darkening by tbe assumed Insanity of "Edgar," was the grandest effort we have ever seen on our boards. Tho utter tenderness of his tones as be inquired of the poor outcast If he bad been broifght to his ab ject condition by his daughter's treachery his mind ever intent upon his own sad case, was felt by every heart present as a touch of nature, something more than mere copy, the very feeling itself. This, the central act, was that In which most Interest centered, and that which will be long est remembered by those who witnessed It. The sceno in the first act, where he curses "Gonerll," and that in the second, whero he renounces, her again with her sister "Regan." were those wherein it might be expected from his natural power he would excel, as he did, but he shone to most advantage in his encounter with "Poor Tom," and in the flrst scene of tho fourth act, when the curtain rises reveallnghlm.hisnew found "Cordelia" and his physician, wherein he gives us another most artistic hit in uw conoquy witn uiese and his grad ual return from the blackness of mental darkness to the light of reason. These, and the last scene of all, where we find him with the lovely form of the dead "Cordelia," her head resting In his arms, while he speaks of her, and. to her, with the tenderness of a doting father, were the pictures of the play, the gems In a magnificent picture, standing in tho foreground, of which we always find Xang and Miss Hawthorne nearest to tho artist who stands alone, well out, like one apart from all the world.
