The masd-meeting called to Axeinble
at Tomer hall, on Ioplar street, last night
was anything but a succ k. there not being
over sixty persona present.
The meeting wa cm an I ted by calling Mr.
John Uosber to the chair. He thanked the
meeting for the honor conferred, and an
nounced that the meeting wan ready for busi

the crowd was evidently quite a setect one,
which, being viewed from the ieakerif
atand. could not more comport with what he
would wish as a crowd. He had come to hear
the views of candidates upon subjects affect
ing the agriculture, commerce, and other In

from New York to Ban Kranclsco-e ery va
riety of industry was deprehbed. Therefore
the men to be elected within the next two or
three years would be put to the wvert lest
that legislator ever knew. The war
debt had to be paid. In Mem

made no war agatn&t anyone. He thought
the young men were made prematurely
old by the war. The objection
mat the men nominated would iznoru ana

welfare of Memphis. This was unfounded,
Borne of the men had been in the legislature,
and voted rieht on the fundlnir-blll.HS well as
other questions. They once voted rUht ; heuoe
the presumption U they will vote right again.
It was said tbe noiinees would not take up
measures of reform, lie saw no reason wny
they bhonld not seek reform, if elected. He

esteemed and valuable member of this court,
in the bosom of his own home, surrounded
by his family and friends, he peacefully and
hooefull v breathed his last on the sixth In
stant, lull of years, lull of honors, and foil or
mat connaence oi nis ienow-men, inspired
by a long Hue or weighty obligations Inlly
discharged, and onerous duties r.ttbfully per
formed. A merciful Providence had granted
him well.ntgn the full measure of turee-ecore-and-ten,
allotted as the period of tho exist

fulness and honor. Many of them were years
too marked by trials anu sacrifices, in early
life bis struggles with the world were flUed by
those twin jailers of the daring mind, humb.e
birth and iron fortune; but by the
constant exercise of those noble en

high resolve, which ever animated
and embellished, his character, he rose above
the pitiless waves of adversity, and won an
enviable place la society. In official position,

Christian gentleness and a confiding faith in

which suffereth long and is kind," rareiy, if

In the discharge or the varied duties which
they imposed as a Justice of the peace, as a

he was prompt, couileous,cousclenllous and

stain; no blot dims Its purity,
no blemish mars lta beauty, whilst upon Ills
useiui anu exieuueu career mere wtewiso
haugs not a single shadow. He was Indeed a
man or many virtues and but few faults.
Kind hearts will treasure up the memory of
tbe former, and th, recollections of his gener

over the latter; and whereas, U is fit wheu
an old public servant passes away, leaving be
