Sam Robinson, the brutal negro
arretted on Friday for attempting to
commit a rape on a little colored girl,

Between eeven and eight o'clock,
yesterday, Mr. James 8. Chamberlin,
a gcoi, amiaDie young man, who
has been olflciating as clerk for
the past Ave years on the

last at the room or his brother, Mr. John

Illinois, a victim to that fell disease,
consumption. For the past two months,
during which time he was obliged to
cease from active business, however un
willingly, he has borne ins sutierings
with true christian resignation. His
friends on the river were unremitting in
their attentions to every want. He had
the best of medical skill and attention,
and Rev. Dr. Carmichael, rector of
Christ church, paid him many visits,
and before bis death the deceased as
sured those around his bedside that ho
died in the hopes of a glorious raurrec-

paid to his remains at Elmwood ceme
tery yesterday. All the steamers in port
displayed their flags at half-mast and
almost every s eamboatman in the city
was present at the funeral services in

During the pat week the lovers of the
drama were treated to half a dozen per
formances of Mr Joseph Jefferson's
cTpat snecialfy of Jtip Van Winkle. The

and the mercury hovered now and then
in close proximity to zero, but still the
houses were good and the audiences
highly delighted. It is true that the
vast crowds which were wont to greet
Jefferson were not to be seen during the
lato engagement, and it must be said
that the general public, however much
they may have admired the "Rip" of
former days, are now inclined to think
that he ought to leave the scene of his
former glories, and give place to ome
thing new, startling, or even strange.
The largo audience of Friday was ample
evidence that Mr. Jefferson has lost
none of his magnetism or popularity.

thing different from his extensive reper

vation and study placed herself in the

petuous, but unfortunate "Maria Antoi
nette" on Tuesday as the virgin queen of
.England, "Ji,tizaDetn," and on Wednes
day In her inimitable role of "Lady Tea
zle" in Sheridan's splendid comedy, The
School for Scandal. In order that taese
great nieces may be suitably interpreted
and placed before the Memphis theater
goers with fit setting and dressing,
Mrs. Lander will be supported during
her engagement by Frank Lawier's
capital Chicago company, among whom
are several very fine actors and actresses.
