upper floors. This was greatly occa

the principal steam-pipe. Many were
inclined to blame the steam-flttere, but

Printed In life-like coKra. we have

baauteous ladies that do now or may
hereafter follow iu his traiH. There is a
good deal of yaller In it, a little green,

Between eeven and eight o'clock,
yesterday, Mr. James 8. Chamberlin,
a gcoi, amiaDie young man, who
has been olflciating as clerk for
the past Ave years on the
steamcTS A. J. White, Phil Allin
and other local packets, breathed bis
last at the room or his brother, Mr. John
B. Chamberlin, cieiK or itie steamer
Illinois, a victim to that fell disease,
consumption. For the past two months,
during which time he was obliged to
cease from active business, however un
willingly, he has borne ins sutierings
with true christian resignation. His
friends on the river were unremitting in
their attentions to every want. He had
the best of medical skill and attention,
and Rev. Dr. Carmichael, rector of
Christ church, paid him many visits,
and before bis death the deceased as
sured those around his bedside that ho
died in the hopes of a glorious raurrec-
tion. The iaf-t sari mars oi respect was
paid to his remains at Elmwood ceme
tery yesterday. All the steamers in port
displayed their flags at half-mast and
almost every s eamboatman in the city
was present at the funeral services in
Gracd church. Deceased was a native
of New York city, but waB educated in
Kentucky. He was only twenty-four
jvars of age at the lime of his death.
But few young men nave passea away
to that "bourne from wnicn no traveler
returns" to much respected and regret

Htinplils Theater.
During the pat week the lovers of the
drama were treated to half a dozen per
formances of Mr Joseph Jefferson's
cTpat snecialfy of Jtip Van Winkle. The
wnrtMifr ouch nleht was extremely cold,
and the mercury hovered now and then
in close proximity to zero, but still the
houses were good and the audiences
highly delighted. It is true that the
vast crowds which were wont to greet
Jefferson were not to be seen during the
lato engagement, and it must be said
that the general public, however much
they may have admired the "Rip" of
former days, are now inclined to think
that he ought to leave the scene of his
former glories, and give place to ome
thing new, startling, or even strange.
The largo audience of Friday was ample
evidence that Mr. Jefferson has lost
none of his magnetism or popularity.
but it is to be hoped that when next he
revisits aiempuis ne win give us some
thing different from his extensive reper
toire. 2Sr. Lander.
To-morrow night the famous trage
dienne, Mrs. Lander, more familiarly
known to lovers of all that is excellent
iu the drama, as Jean Davenport, will
commence an engagement at the Thea
ter. The fame of this conscientious and
thorough artist extends from the At
lantic board to the Pacific slope, and
away across the briny ocean to England,
Scotland, Ireland and Australia. Gifted
by nature with natural talents of the
highest order, Mrs. Lander has by culti
vation and study placed herself in the
front rank of the tragediennes of the
stage in Europe and America. She will
appear on Monday as tho beautiful, im
petuous, but unfortunate "Maria Antoi
nette" on Tuesday as the virgin queen of
.England, "Ji,tizaDetn," and on Wednes
day In her inimitable role of "Lady Tea
zle" in Sheridan's splendid comedy, The
School for Scandal. In order that taese
great nieces may be suitably interpreted
and placed before the Memphis theater
goers with fit setting and dressing,
Mrs. Lander will be supported during
her engagement by Frank Lawier's
capital Chicago company, among whom
are several very fine actors and actresses.
The seats aro already being sold, and
those who wish good places should ap-
ply promptly at the Jeaoody cigar stand
or the box office at the Theater.
The Bntrhrra' Ball.
With all the sanguinary thoughts in
tent on the brute creation, especially of
the bovine species, the butchers of Mem
phis, aud especially those who belong to
the "Butchers' Union," are the ;most
kindly, charitably inclined, and social,
good feeling gentlemen iu the city of
Memphis. They are a "jolly lot," so to
speak, as will be shown beyond denial
when they give their fifth annual ball
on the twenty-Gtth of Jauuary, at Coch
ran hall. In order to show that both
supper and ball will bs a success, it has
only to be mentioned that the matter is
iu the hands of such well-known gen
tlemen as Messrs. Charles Kney, Kerr,
Elphinstone, La Croix, H. Seeseel, sr.,
Wendler, Huppert, Gefz, J. Schilling,
Winans, Worner, L. Schilling, L. Kney,
and George Thoma.
