THE M. APPEAL- TBTUKSDA.1l . MAY QO lfcj'.fc mmnm appeal UlUKSIUY, 3AY 20, 187c. Wb publish io another column r li t ei Barnes of gentlemen who propose, in deference to pobllc opinion, to close their plaeee of business on Monday, the twenty-fourth Instant. These do not embrace sll, nor half of the very lhrge olaw who control ami direct the mer cantile fortune of Memphis, but they ro maftlcient to encourage those who have not yet been appealed to to follow an example that in the e9t evidence we have yet had that the demonstration on Monday will be by long odds the largest and the grandest ever witnessed In a city that, within the past fifteen years, has eeen many very imposing parades. The several committees hav ing the matter in charge are indefatiga ble in their work and are determined that nothing shall be left undone that can In the least contribute to its success. That specially charged with procuring signatures to the propo sition to close the stores will be at work to-day, and we hope will meet with prompt response on the part of our Main street merchants, to whom they will pecially address themselves. There ought not to be one exception to the rule, and we feel satisfied there will not be. From what we can hear the great body of the people of Memphis are thor oughly aroused, and are determined upon a turn out cn masse. They will make the memorial services on Monday memorable forever as a golden day in the city's calendar a day to be distinguished as that which signalizes the perfect restoration of good feeling between the sections and the closing up of the chasm of civil war. Let us all unite and as one man labor for so glori ous a consummation. The Intelligent Washington corres pondent of the Chicago Times thinks the "southern outrage" business has perma nently disappeired from the political field. Mythical "masked riders" are to be allowed to stable iheir shadowy steeds forever, and the "bloody shirt," washed clean in the waters of acknowledged er ror, will flap peacefully in the breeze be side much other regenerated dirty linen of Radicalism. Last year witnessed the end of the outrage nonsense. It was tried faithfully, and used alike at north ern and southern polls. Northern and southern voters alike rejected it, and though despairing carpetbagging riff rafTin congress strained venomously the whole eession for its retention, the sober judgment of the party has finally con cluded to abandon it. xIt is to be buried dolefully but peaceably, and will sleep the sleep of the unjust, alongside side of the Masonry terror and know-nothing alarm. It was a "good enough Morgan" for several years, aud in justice to some otits more powerful northern exponents, it should be credited with having been actually regarded as a genuine issue by thousands. But nothing moves faster than the work 01 uudeceiving, and there is hardly a prominent Republican in the country to-day who does not understand that white league and kuklux horrors were the hugest an J most melancholy myths in the political aunals of the na tion. The Blaira are not dead, only sleep, iug. The Hon. Montgomery, late post-master-general, has given evidence of the fact. He is projecting.Presidential candidates, the latest being Governor Tilden, of New York, or Mr. John W. Garrett, president of the Baltimore aud Ohio. railroad. He says in a recent let ter that "if the nominations were now to be made I should hesitate between Tilden aud Garrett." Mr. Blair says that if better exponents of the anti-monopoly issue are mentioned, they will be preferred by him "to even more able men whose names would serve to force on the new and distinctive issue which must be made," and adds: "It is the man whose nomination itself forces this issuo who is needed, and needed not on ly to give the opposition the govern ment, but to inaugurate a healthy and Invigorating policy when it comes to power. And it is not coming to power until by such action aa I have indicated it compels friends and foes alike to re cognize it as the agency to uproot the gross abuses which have grown up and been tolerated by both parties during our protracted sectional stri.'e, and not a reactionary organization led and con trolled by the opponents of the war for the Union." James Lick's changes in his deed of trust do not seem, says the New York Times, to be radical, and so far as they go promise better things than the origi nal scheme. Instead of a donation of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars for a bronze group at the State; capital, he gives one hundred thousand dollars for statuary at the new city hall, San Francisco, au ambitious structure which promises to cost a tremendous sum. The author of The Star Spangled Banner is to have a sixty thousand dollar statue, instead of one coating one hundred and hfty thousand dollars. It is such risky business procuring statues by special commission, most people will bo glad that the millionaire River has consented to reduce expenditure in this direction The university of California, we must suppose, can be better trusted to spend seven hundred thousand dollars for an observatory than a board of trustees who will have their hands full if they have the management of the millions which Mr. Lick proposes to make immediately available- As the donor's relatives are better taken care of than in the llrst deed, it Is not likely that they will be hereafter suspected of unsettling the old nan's disposition of his property. The Chicago Times is opposed to fcSun set Cox for speaker of the forty-fourth congress, and says that "although he is probably the least objectionable among tfao eastern candidates for the position, he does not control as many votes as elthei Fernando Wood or Hamuel J. Randall, and it would not surprise any one if either of the gentlemen should walk away with their diminutive com petitor, and pluck the honor with scarce ly an eflort. Besides, the speaker's chair Ii not the proper place f jr Mr. Cox. He is too Interesting a debater to be ipared from the floor. Without hia fre quent sallies of wit and eloquence-there would be nothing to relieve the proceed ings ol the house from positive monoto nous dullnei." The Indianapolis &entine disclaims any loi or part in the pro-eut know nothing movement by native citizens, aud HS.ert that the leuders in it are the editor of the New York Timf, an Eng lishman who has never become an American citizen; the editor of the Buf falo Commercial Advertiser, a natural ized Englishman; the editor of the Cin cinnati Gazette, naturalized Irishman; and Nast, a naturalized Bavarian. Probably some of the moat active allies in the uo-pojery and anti-foreign cam paign aTe of the same class men who do not understand the full scope of the liberty which concedeswhilo It demands latitude in everything. The Chicago Tribune correspondent, who was in Memphis a few weeks Bince a Mr. Thompson continues his let ters to that paper, and takes a very gloomy view of the political situation in the south, and professes to believe that "the Democratic leaders are only wait ing their opportunity to establish a new southern confederacy." The Tribune is constrained to confess that it publishes these views "merely as curiosities, and disavows any sympathy or respect for them." But would it not be better and more praiseworthy in our contemporary to recall the correspondent, and save us and itself from the mess of stuff for which it has no respect? The next most Important centennial celebration is that of the battle of Breed's, or Bunker Hill, for which the Boston authorities are industriously em ployed in making preparations. Bun ker Hill, the historical knoll, It will be remembered, la now a portion of the city of Boston. Poet, historian, and or ator, says the New York Times, are busy in preparing the intellectual weapons for the occasion, or gathering new relics of the great day from the museum of the past. There was no more brave and desperate struggle In the war of inde pendence, and scarce one in the civil war where both sides suffered proportionate ly more. The New York Tribune is authority for the statement that we are not yet done with the Beecher case, and that for the benefit of the public Mrs. Tilton U to reaffirm her innocence before she sinks into hopeless obscurity; Mis. Moulton to repeat her story; aud even Bessie Turner to make a final appear ance before that incredible type of womanhood disappears from the stage. Now, in the name of patient humanity, let us protest against all this in time. We want to hear no more of it. We have bad more than enough, a surfeit.
