Situated on the banks of that great river, "whose waves are umber and whose sands aie gold," Memphis Is destined to be the great city of the southwest. At t he head of peretuaf steamuoat navigation, she pos sesses advantage- which neither St. Louis nor any other city on tbe river possesses-. What Is it that mainly builds up agreatcity? We answer mast emphatically, the energy and enterprise of merchants more than any other one cause; and we are happy ;o know that no city In the Tnlon can boast of a more intelligent, exter prlslng, honorable and energetic class of mer chanu than the city of Memphis. They seem to cultivate an emulation In seeing who can be fortmoft in the great work of the city's prosperity. She Is aiming to stretch out her iron arms to embrace the great and growing trade in the direction of Kansa. City and the northwest. This is a great enla-iprie,and oe mands constant attention. The case has baau tried once before in this court, but resulted in a mistrial, and has been continued and passed from term to term ever since, and there has been a considerable effort by his counsel to procuro his release during this terrh of the court on a plea of former conviction by a military court-martial', which was the case. He was tried by a military court-martial shortly after tbe murder was committed, and was sentenced to be shot, but made his escapo before tbo sentence was executed, and was not arrested again until some time last year. The court, however, overruled the plea, and held that i the conviction beforo a military court would Lave nothing to do with the civi 1 process, so he was compelled logo to trial. The murder was a brutal, cold-blooded affair. and, if guilty, should be punished as the law directs. The jury was only partially made up last evening, for. owing to the scarcity of countrymen in town, the sheriff and his deputies hud to make a laid ou the business man oi ijay street anu iiarket square for Ju rors, and quite a number of thorn will find themselves fined twenty-five dollars for re itisiug to obey the summon."
