Thp fnllowhiL' preamble and resolution ilrmtl not a dissenting vote, viz: Whuweas. The ioint commission of the Methodist, Eniscooal church and tlie Metho tlist Episcopal church south, hi session at tape May, August last, unanimously agret-u declaration and basis of fraternity. That basis embraces a distinct and emphatic vecooni'tion of the fact that each ot said churches is a legitimate branch of Episcopal Methodism in the United btates, having a common origin in the Methodist Episcopal rlmreli oTfranizod in 1784: and further, that the Methodist Episcopal churcli south, since its organization uy tne voluntary exercise oi the right of the southern animal conferences, ministers and members, to adhere to its com munion, has been an evangelical church reared on scriptural . foundations, and her ministers and members, with those of the Methodist Episcopal church, have constituted one Methodist family, though in distinct ecclesiastical connections; further, that lmsis establishes rules for the adjustment of adverse claims to church property, and so furnishes a plan tor the removal ol a long RtiiTnlin" cause of alienation, strife and trouble; and yet further, that basis lays down principles which, when carried out under the benign influences of fraternity, will do away with and prevent tne unseemiy anu mosi m jurious existence of that great evil in our common Methodism, of altar erected against altar, of church interfering with churcli, in localities and fields already occupied, and by no means requiring the presence and labors of the two Methodisms. In view of the facts, rules and principles set forth in and deduced from the Cape May declaration and basis of fraternity, llesolced. That recognizing the hand of God in the action of the joint commission, the Memphis Annual Conference of tlie Methodist Episcopal church, south, do hereby approve and accept the action, with a view to a full and final settlement of the differences and dif ficulties which have long existed between the two great branches of the Methodist Episco pal church in America; and we urge all our ministers and members to carry out the rules and principles adopted unaiumously by the joint commission. A resolution was adopted requiring the regular collections for missions from the charge where the conference is to meet to be taken up before the opening of the session. The bishop was urgent and eloquent m his appeal to the pastors to do their whole duty in behalf of missions. Resolutions wore adopted requiring all the preachers in charge to take up collections in all their congregations; a failure, without reasonable excuse, to operate against the pas sage of the preacher's character and oflicial administration; the collections for foreign missions to be made before the first of May. Conference resolved to meet again at seven o'clock, and then adjourned with the lene dictiou of the bishop, Kveniutr Session. A resolution offered by Judge A. R. Boone, after discussion by the judge and Rov. AV. V. Johnson, and some remarks by Bishop Pierce favorable to iU passage, wa adopted, clang ing the constitution of the conference board of missions, so that the collection for domes tic missions shall not lxj made at the same time as the collection for superanuates and widows and orphans of preachers.
