daughter of Dr. A. A. Burleson, of this city.
The attendants were Mr. J. M. Tighe and Miss
Bettie Burleson, Mr. George G. Dent and
Miss Sallie Patterson. Dr. Burleson is an
old resident of our city, and his daughter has

At St. Patrick's church, Sunday night last,
an interesting marriage ceremony took place,
the bride being Miss Caroline Botto ana the
groom Mr. Joseph Lagomarsino, both of our
city. Father Luisilla performed the cere
mony that bound two loving hearts in one.
The bride is a charming lady, of whom it
may be said :
Her smile Is sunlight, and her laugh
That sunlight set to tune;
Her lips the honey-bee might quaff
And dream of buds In June.
At the close of the impressive service con
gratulations were in order, and these were
showered upon the happy pair by a host 'of
friends. The words of the poet may be ap
propriate to the bridal couple who have start
ed on the "voyage ot life together:
Be to every man Just; and to woman
Be gentle, and tender, and true;
For thine own do thy best; but for no man,
Do less than a brother should do.
So living thy days full to number,
lu peace thou shalt pa&s to the grave.
Thou shalt He down and rest thee and slumber,
Beloved by the good and the brave.

of the chairman was fixed at f 2500 for the
year 1878, out of which sum he ia to pay his
clerk or book-keeper; and Esquire Tom Hol
man, jr., the present efficient chairman, was
re-elected by acclamation.
Esquire Holman was escorted to the chair,
and he delivered the following appropriate
address:
Gentlemen ot the County Court:
Deeply appreciating, as I do, the honor
implied by your action in re-electing me as
your presiding officer for the ensuing year, I
beg you to accept in return my most sincere
and greatful thanks. Four years ago, when
called to this position by your generous con
fidence, it was my pride and my ambition to
do my duty not only to you as associate mem
bers of this court, but to labor for the sub
stantial and material interests of Shelby
county; and especially was it my earnest en
deavor to relieve the county as rapidly as
possible from the worst of all servitude, the
bondage of oppressive debt. This legacy
which I thus inherited, and some of the stub
born facts with which I had. to deal were an
empty treasury, the market flooded with our
securities, at less than fifty cents on the dol
lar, aggregating in volume several bundred
thousand dollars, much embarrassing and ex
pensive litigation, and a rate of taxation of
I Z7-1U0 on each hundred dollars value
of property. But by your hearty
co-operation and valuable assistance a new
order of things was inaugurated, and the re
sult has been great retrenchment in expendi
tures, mofe system in the machinery of gov
ernment, a reduction of more than a hun
dred per cent, in the rate of taxation, and the
almost total extinguishment of our floating
debt, and I now hazard my reputation as a
prophet by the declaration that, with ordi
nary prosperity in the land and a reasonable
discharge of the obligations resting upon each
tax-payer, the close of the present year will
bnd us tree from this heretofore onerous bur
den. Then my ambition will have been en
tirely gratified, and I shall not only be wil
ling, but most anxious to intrast to other
and abler hands the helm of government for
merly committed to my feeble guidance. I
recommend but an act of simple justice to
the officers of this county (and 1 include the
clerks of the various courts) to say that they
nave all been prompt in their monthly re
ports and generally prompt in paying over
all collections made, and so far as 1 know.
and it is my duty to know, not one of said
officers is in arrears a single dollar. Again
returning my thanks and wishing each one of
you all the happiness this world can afford.
I announce this court as permanently organ
ized and ready for further business.
The salary of the county attorney for the
year 187a was faxed at f zOOO, and Mr. Julius
A. Taylor, the present attorney, was re-elect'
ed by acclamation.
Dr. Ess was elected by acclamation as
physician of the pesthouse, with a salary of
per annum.
The salary of physician of the poorhouse
was hxed at flZUU per annum, and Mt. (J. n.
Duncan was re-elected by acclamation.
Esquires Quigley, Coleman and Elam were
elected poorhouse commissioners. 1 he sala
ries are as follows: The chairman $60, and
his associates f 20 and $lo respectively.
Esquires Shelby, Mason and Egnew were
elected jail commissioners, their salaries
being fixed as follows; The chairman twenty
dollars and his associates hi teen dollars each
The salary of superintendent of the pest-
house was fixed at five hundred dollars, and
Esquire Hoegel was elected by acclamation.
On motion, H. B. Culien was elected ranger
by acclamation.
J. E. Frost was elected constable to wait on
the grand jury of the criminal court of Shelby
county tor the January term. Mr. b. C. Jen
nings was elected constable to do similar ser
vice for the grand jury of the Bartlett court,
In the afternoon, after recess, the conrt re
assembled and proceeded with the considera
tion of regular quarterly business. At the
regular hour court adjourned to meet again
this morning at the usual yiour.
