To-morrow morning the State medical association will assemble at Cochran hall. The Btreets are getting dusty again, not withstanding the recent heavy spring showers. Bishop Fitzgerald will at ten o'clock to day dedicate the Catholic church at Uope field, Arkansas. Last Monday night the Sardis, Missis sippi depttwaa burglarized and plundered of meat and coffee. The smallpox is ravaging several coun ties in Mississippi, but principally in Marion and Pike counties. The April term of the county quarterly court an the probate court will commence to-morrow morning. Van Amburgh'B great circus and men agerie will to-morrow and Tuesday give ex hibitions on the bluff. The county court clerk issued twenty-two marriage licenses last week. Of this number, sixteen were issued to colored people. The register in bankruptcy will hereafter dispose of bankruptcy matters at No. 20 Madison street, formerly DeSoto bank. The "Catholic Doctrine of Confession" is the subject of a lecture to be given this even ing at half-past seven o'clock, at St. Patrick's church. There will be a stage rehearsal of Fra Diarolo, at Mx-nnerchor hall, to-morrow night at eight o'clock. None but escorts ad mitted. S. B. Dickens, No. 285 Second street, has all the latest pa pen-, including the dailies, weeklies, monthlies, news, literary and scientific. To-morrow the recorder will commence holding police court at eight o'clock in the morning, which will be kept up during the spring and summer terms. The "Big Seven" club will give their grand entertainment and hop at the Cochran hall this evening, by way of a complimentary benefit tendered to George liruch. Unsuccessful attempts at suicide are be coming too prevalent in this city at present. The stomach-pump is the great enemy of the sensation-hunting reporters of the press. Dick Logan, a few days since, stole eight hams of cured meat from J. M. Adams, who resides near Cuba, in this State, and started for Memphis. He has not as yet been ar rested. The Robert Drury-Gibson muider uise is being argued by counsel at the criminal court. To-morrow morning the defense and State lawyers will close the argument. and the case will be given to the jury for a settlement. The game will be hotly contested, and will develop the strength of the home senu-pro'essional clubs. Virginia and Tennessee went far ahead last year of North Carolina, which has long headed the list of producers of peanuts. The estimated fallina-off in the three States is five hundred and hlty-two thousand bushels, or more than one-third of a good crop. Bees have commenced work uncommon ly early this season, indicating that spring has fairly set in, and that we are to have a fine crop of honey. The winter has been mild, and bees have come out vigorous aDd strong, with a surplus of their winter store left over. A white man, on Friday morning last, stole a suit of clothes from Mr. Filbert, on Jett'erson street. He was in company with another man at the time the larceny was committed. The man claimed to belong to a circus company, and was ottering circus tickets for sale. Rev. J. R. Graves and Messrs. A. T. Sanders, R. F. Harney and M. L. Jackson were adjudicated voluntary bankrupts by Register Latham yesterday. Judge Irving Halsey was selected as assignee of Morris Kubn. bankrupt. Says the Nashville American: "J. Y. Ottley, W. D. Mayfield and J. B. Patton having purchased the publishing bouse of the Southern Baptist society, located at Memphis, the first-named gentleman left here last night to superintend its removal, which will be completed by April loth." American Agriculturist, for April. Sea side, Lakeside, Fireside and Riverside Libra ries, i bracing over five hundred new and standard novels, at the low price of ten and twenty cents each; pictorials, magazines and dailies of late dates can be had at Mansford's, corner Second and Monroe. The Seaside Library contains an inter esting Btory entitled, "By Celia'a Arbor," by Walter Besant and James Rice. Spangler, at 886 Main street, has it, together with all the other Libraries, besides any amount and tverv variety of literature, monthly and weekly. All the latest dailies on hand, as usual. The farmers throughout the country ad jacent to Memphis are hard at work plowing the ground and planting corn. Already many speak of planting cotton this week. There has been more work done in the way of clear ing up and fencing, this spring, so far, than ever before within the memory of the oldest inhabitant. The marine monster which created so great a sensation between here and St. Louis, and also in the vicinity of Vicksburg, some time since, has been captured near Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and will be brought here for exhibition. It is a horrible speci men of a salt-water monster, of the shark species. An account of its capture will be found in our river column, on the third page. Yesterday afternoon a number of gentle men who are admirers of the fairer sex took their usual stands on Main street crossings, in order to see and admire the ladies who came from the Theater matinee, but the ad mirers forgot that no matinee was held yes terday, the Theater being closed for the reg ular season. It was the result of force of habit on the part of the gentlemen. The present supreme court of Tennessee will meet next Monday, for the last time, at Jackson, in the western division of the State. The next election may change the complexion of the court considerably. During the next election the decisions of the court, in the eight volume of HeiskelVs Rejxrts, on the subject of tax-collectors and tax-payers, will cut some figure. Ninety-seven names were added to the temperance list last evening at the Varieties Theater, on Jefferson street. To-night Rev. David Walk will preach a temperance ser mon at the Greenlaw Operahouse, and to morrow night a grand mass-meeting will be held at the same place in the interest of re form and sobriety, as propagated by the Mur phy movement. Everybody is invited. Seats free all over the house. A few nights since a drunken man, who came to the city on an up-river boat, com- Elained at the police stationhouse that he ad been robbed of eighty dollars by some fellow deck passenger. The drunken man wanted to swear out a warrant, but on ex amining his bundle of clothing, or baggage, he found his money, which he had placed there for safe keeping during a sober interval. ' At the First Presbyterian church, during the past week, Rev. J. D. Burkhead, of Huntsville, Alabama, has been holding a series of successful revival meetings, and will continue to hold the meetings during the present week, at the usual hours nine o'clock in the morning and four and half-past seven o'clock in the evening. To-day meet ings will be held at eleven o'clock in the morning and four and half-past seven o'clock ic the evening. Near Kosciusko, Mississippi, on Wednes day last, a fearful tornado prevailed. The wind blew from the northeast to the south west, felling trees, fences and houses. The outhouses and fences on the following places were blown down : Mrs. Earth's, Allen Du bard's, Wm. Turner's, A. Horton's and Wm. Harris's. Mr. Roby had three miles of fencing blown down -on his place, and the residence of R. Ragland was felled to the ground. The destruction of timber was im mense. A tram p walked i nto a bank the other day, f.r.d, stepping up to the counter, said: "May I ask you a question, sir?" "Yes, but be quick about it," replied the clerk. "I want to know if all the greenbacks have retired from circulation," said the tramp, with a very anxious air. "Oh, no," replied the clerk, "there is about three hundred and fifty million of them yet." "Thanks, thanks," said the man, with a visible emotion, "you take a load off my mind. It is so long since I have seen one that I was afraid they .had retired," and then slowly retired himself. For several days the police of the cotton exchange have been making up a case of cotton stealing, ana have succeeded in bring ing the accused parties to justice. Eight bales of cotton were stolen from P. M. Pat terson & Co., transfer agents, some days ago. One of the colored dray-drivers. Bob Brown, was arrested, and has been indicted by the grand jury of the criminal court. Jacob Hirch, a rag and junk dealer, doing busi ness in this city, and who received the eight bales of cotton, was arrested and indicted, and placed under bonds in the sum of two thousand dollars, which he gave last evening, and was then released from custody. An adjourned meeting of the various property-owners on Vance, Pontotoc, Linden and the various cross-street was held on Thursday evening last, in the Linden street schoolhouse. The report of the committee on sewer was read and ordered filed. On mo tion, anew finance committee was appointed, consisting of W. L. Cameron, S. C. Toof and J. M. Goodbar, who were requested to use their best endeavors to secure the sum ol two huridred dollars, the amount asked for by the sewer committee to defray the expense of survey and other incidental expenses. The directors of the Masonic temple) held a meeting on Friday night, and, after hear ing the report, appointed a committee to carry out the purpose of completing the edi fice, wmca would be an ornament to tne city, and a credit to the energy and enterprise cf the order. The propriety of issuing bonds was discussed, bat no vote was taken. Tha committee appointed C. W. Adams, being chairman, to ascertain the legality and feasi bility of issuing bonds tor the completion ot the building. The committee is to report at the next meeting, which will be held on the fifteenth of April. Mr. John R.Godwin was chairman, and Mr. A. J. Wheeler secretary of the meeting. The police management of the fire at Walker Bros. A: Co. last nieht was every thing to be commended. No one was per mitted to enter the building except the fire men, police and proprietors. Even the clerks of the house were refused admission until they were identified. Two or three newspa per reporters were admitted, and they prowled around the building at will, but we do not think they carried off anything. They went to work pitching goods from one side of the building to the other, when the flood of water came down, and thereby reduced the loss in stock. Captain A rata and Sergeant Homan, of the police, had charge of the building, and watched everybody and every thing. At ten o'clock last night a fire broke out in the fourth story of the wholesale dry goods, notions and clothing house of Walker Bros. & Co., No. 229 Main stref-t. 1 he firm is composed of Messrs. Louis, Benjamin and W. Waiker. G. U. Juduh and U. H. Alyers. The fourth story was used as a packing room, and it was filled with boxes, goods, etc , of quite a combustible character. The fire de partment, with two engines, was at the scene of the fire in a few minutes after the alarm was given, and two lines of hose were carried up through the house, along the stairways, to the fourth btory. A large amount of water was pitched into the front portion of the building, where the fire seemed to be under headway. The smoke arising from burning boxes, cotton and wool en goods, etc., was thick and suffocating, but in half an hour the fire was suppressed. The principal damage was dono by water, which poured down through the different stories of the building into the cellar, lhe stock ot goods is valued at some $175,000, acd the damage to tue goods by watrr t- c- ; mated at about 40,000. The building is damaged to the amount of, probably, S200;J. The losses fall principally on foreign insurance offices the insurance amounting to about $ 140,000, of which only $ 10,000 i3 held by hem com panies. Cigar Depot Removed.
