A Disimte Between Two Tarties Adju- uiciitod Willi a Chair and a Fist-Fight. Memphis can boast of a good many things. but it is not often that she can boast of a fiirht between well-known men in a court of justice. Yesterday nearly the whole town was a tip-toe with curiosity concerning an encounter between Chief McFadden, of the Fire Department, and William B. Mattox. Superintendent of Construction of the Mem. phis telephone exchange, for some time pa-d, it is said, these two gentlemen have not been on the friendliest terms.. Both of them are men of courage, and seldom forget those whom they think have injured them. Ihe aB'ray which occurred yesterday was unfor tunate in many respects, concerning, as it does, two men in public positions. However unfortunate it may be, it is necessary tor the recording angel of the Appeal to put it all down, and so he invokes the ethereal muse to tell the woes of Aleraihlen and Mattox About 8 o'clock yesterday morning a fire broke out in the house of J. R. Garvin, col ored, at 18 Avery street Chief McFadden, as was his custom, rode hurriedly to the scene of the conflagration, and as lie did so he came pretty near running over Mr. Mat tox, who was viewing the ore with a specta tor's casual eye. Now Chief McFadden was probably not thinking ot Mr. Mattox, but was only actuated by a keen desire to get to the fire and superintend his men. Mr. Mat tox, however, thought otherwise. He con sidered that the Chief was actuated by spirit of taunting nonchalance and intended provoking him. Ihe result of it all was that Mattox was provoked, and put his hand bthinu him as if he had a pistol and wanted to shoot the chief. The latter regarded it as threat, and, meeting Captain O llaver, asked him to search Mattox. No pistol was found. "You tried to run over me," insisted Mat tox. At this point it is said the Chief told Mr. Mattox that he was a "s- of a b- At this Mattox asked Captain O'Haver to arrest the Lhief. "On what ground?" said the Captain. ''lie has made an assault upon me." The Captain could not see that this consti tuted an assault, and he refused to arrest McFadden then, telling Mattox that it was necessary that he should attend to the fire, and he did not want to interfere with him while in the discharge of his dnty. If he wanted to arrest him in the morning it would not be difficult to find the Chief. Mattox persisted bo that after the fire Captain O'Ha ver arrested the Chief and had him charged on the docket with abusive language. Shortly afterward Mr. Mattox came to the station- house and told Captain O'Haver to dismiss the charge, as he had a State's warrant jn 'Squire Coleman's office. The charge was accordingly rubbed out. " lbe scene shuts now, and the second act of the tragedy is laid in Justice Coleman's office, 294 Main street. 'Squire Coleman, metaphorically putting on the judicial er mine, took a seat and rapped the court to order. A large number of spectators were present, including Lantaiu U Haver and sev- t ral firemen. The charge against the Chief was asrault. Silence was effected, and Mr. M ittox went on with his statement to show wherein the Chief had been guilty of assault. Ho described the scene at the fire. Chief McFadden interrupted him, and asked him if he had not put his hand in his hip pocket, as it on the point ot drawing a pistol. I did put my hand there," said Mattox "but I hail no pistol. I did it to bluff you and 1 can blutt you again. He then went on to state tliat McFadden had called him n of a b h. The Chief here interrupted him. Ihe exact language he used is in un certainty. Some of those present say he e claimed "yon are one," Others declare that he asked the Question. "did vou sav I called you one. hether he said one or the other did not impair the result. Mutlox, who is quick to resent an insult and very capable of taking care of himseli, thought he made a positive assertion, and, right in the midst of the small temple of justice, he seized a chair and rung it down on the Chief's head. The confusion resulting was wonderful to see. The court-room was turned into Pandemo nium, Jr. There seemed to be a general writhinc and heaving of humanity, and the spectator gained the idea that a small riot was breaking looce. Captain O'Haver ran in withReveral others and separated the two chief belligerents, who were getting ready for a renewal of the frav. Several parties were the recipients of blows. t this pincture Captain U llaver felt some one hustling by him and saw him rush up to Mattox and hit him three times, it proved to be J. Ducohnr, the efficient fireman of No. 2, who hud sailed into the afray to help the falling Chief. There was a lively straggle to preserve order, which almost resulted in a free fight. The belligerents were finally sep arated and a fine of twenty-five dollars was imposed upon Mattox, and a fine of ten dol lars upon Donohue. The clans Mattox, Mc Fadden and Donohue then withdrew, and peace smiled again upon the embattled scene. - THE FLORIDA FEVER. Tbe A'ewr Eldorado Where People Ex. pect to Slake 1 orlnnes. Just at present Florida Is the Eldorado wh -re uk n expect to make handsome for tunes. The orange fever is just as strong as the gold itch, and fortunately it is a little more substantia!. People are always glad to hear anything from the land where fortunes are made in the orange groves. There are tho-ie who contend that it is a craze and has nothing in it to justify the enthusiasm ex pended on it; but every year the number of enthusiasts increases, and so does the number of I' lorida lnnd investors. - Yesterday afternoon an Appeal reporter chanced ution Mr. William S. Moore, of Bradcnstown, Tennessee, who has just re turned from a two months visit to Florida, where he has made investments. Like all of those who have visited the enchanted land, Mr. Moore is enthusiastic. To the queries of the reporter he very cheerfully responded. "I went to Florida," said Mr. Moore, "to look around. 1 chose this time of the year so that 1 misht see the country in its worst light, and misht not get any exaggerated no tions of it. When 1 got there I put myself uuder th guidance ol Dr. Hill, a brother of Senator Hill, who knew all the 'ropes,' and who drove me around in his buggy. I got the pick of any kind of land. You can get anything you want there." "Have you seen anybody three who was dis satisfied with his bargain?" "I never saw anybody in Florida who com plained ol his plantation. 1 saw an acre and a halt ot ground covered witn orange trees which were not yielding fruit, which sold for 5iOW. Ihe beauty about an orange planta tion is that tiie longer it stands the more valuable it becomes. The first year a tree which has taken growth is worth a dollar. Each year adds a dollar to it. The second year it is worth two dollars, the third three, etc. An acre oi yielding orange trees is worth $10,(XlO, and you can make the trees yield every month if you are so inclined. I think I took the changing step in my for tune when I went to r lorida. "It must have been pretty warm there?" -no, you are mistaken: it was not as warm there as in Tennessee. A splendid, re- tra-hing breeze conies from the ocean and keeps the temperature lower than it is here. 1 would rather speud the. summer there than in Tennessee. The prettiest and at the same time the poorest counlv in the Mate is Grunge. There are anv nuiulier of beautiful l:ik- s in it,clear as crystal. The upper coun ties where oranges are not raised, are high but flat, and the rain-water accumulates on them. To make them suitable for orange growing they would have to be drained. The facilities for shippirg are being increased everv vear, and by the time a man's trees yield, say five years, the State w ill be covered with railways. PEU.S0XALS. Dr. S. Mansfield leaves to-night for Mont r.agle springs, leunessce. Mr. D. E. Burns returned yesterday from a very succcssltil business trip to the country. Mrs. II. G. Hitzfeld, Esq., 233 Second street, has been appointed Register of Lands for sale or rent in Shelby county for the Bureau of Im migration ol lennessee. lie is also a mem ber of the Executive Committee of West Tennessee. Colonel, W. A. Everman. Treasurer of the Mississippi Levee Board, passed through the city yesterday, en route for his home in Greenville, Mississippi. The bracing air of the lenneesee mountains has been beneficial toward recuperating his health so much so that his youthful appearance was very sur prising to bis numerous mends in this city. PORTER GUARDS. Organisation of the New Company, 8avtBK the ieCtian of Oflicen). The differences existing in the Bluff City Grays, Porter Zouaves and Captain Waldran s company are in a lair way now to be per manently healed, it will be remembered that some time since five men were chosen from each company to select from them all eighty-two men to constitute a new company, to be called the Porter Guards. As long as dissensions were in vogue the effectiveness of the companies was impaired, .bach com pany waB pledged to stand by the action of its committee of five and the joint action of the committee of fifteen. Last night the committee met. Dr. Rogers was called to the chair, and Sirgeant V lldberger was appoint ed secretary. The eighty-two men were then chosen, and it is said they form an excellent company, iuto which it will be hard for dis sension to creep. Next Friday the officers will be elected, lhey are pretty well de cided upon now. Messrs. Waldran, Wild- berger and VY. it. rullcn were appointed a committee to draft the constitution and by laws of the new organization. There can be no reasonable or allowable ground for opposi tion, and a bright career is probably in store for the newly organized company. HOTEL AI1K1YAI.N. Peabodjr Hotel Ci. H. Dereetiwe Fine Playa Havoc with a House on A very street. Between 8 and 9 o'clock yesterday morn ing an alarm of fire sounded from the neigh borhood of Vance and Avery streets. The engines arrived promptly on the scene and found that the fire was in the two-story frame house of J. R. Garvin, colored, on Avery street, below Vance. There were sufficient goods in the house to make the building and contents worth lour or nve thousand dollars. The flames were almost confined to the up per story, which was pretty badly damaged. The lower story was somewhat injured by water. It is. estimated that the loss is about $ 1000, which is covered by a policy in he liirsch insurance company ot London. The fire first appeared near the chimney, un der the roof, and a defective flue is thought to have been the cause of it. There is no evidence of an incendiary. The flames were quickly subdued by the fire department, and the loss was kept down by their well-directed efforts. S1AKIOA, ARK. Only Half a Crop of Cotton Movement to stop the Hale of Uqnor. Mabion, Chittenden Co., Abk., Aueust 1C. 1S81. 1 Editors of the Memphis Appeal: The farmers are very much discouraged on account of the recent drought. The majority of the people think there will not be half a crop made in cotton. The corn in this part of the country is an entire failure; that which was planted early is pretty fair,, but late corn is gone. ' I have been over here three weeks, and the citizens say they have had no rain of any consequence since June. There is a movement on foot at Marion to stop the sale of liquor. There is considerable excitement about it. The petition is headed by some of the leading citizens of Marion, and is being signed by a number of citizens. both white and colored. The dealers have resolved to ref ist the petition, and think they will gain. . They style themselves the "Remonstrance Gang." The anti-whisky men say they will make it liot for them. The "Kemoastrance Ganit" have secured the services of Colonel O. P. Lyles, of Memphis, to detend them, while the A. W. Gang" have Hon. K. "F. Crittenden, of Ma rion, he being the framer of the law which they will enforce. The law says that no liquor shall be sold within three miles of any church, public institution or academy, etc The colored brethren are wondering where their winter drinks are to come Iroru now, The severe drought is killing the timber in the woods, and seems to be very hard on tim ber off the ridges in the bottoms. The cattle are suffering a great deal for water to drink, and some farmers have to drive their stock several miles to water. No more to write at present. VISITOR. WEATHER OBSERVATIONS. War Dep't.
