It is antonishin, when the priceless value 01 good eyesight is considered, to see how careless people are ahont their eyes They will use spectacles utterly un suited to them, read fine print by a dim lamp or by twilight, which is worse, at: indulge in a thousand other impudencies. Ol course peopie will do this they alway have done it, and always will. If not too far gone, however, there is hope for them Lr. Uernhardt, the tamous optician at th Peabody, has relieved thousands duriu his long and useful life, and can do In same for others. He can be consulted daily until further notice. Mcch curiosity has been excitoil Washington by the marriage of Col. E, . c. Boudinot, the well-known and half-breed Cherokee Indian, to Miss Minear, tlaugu ter of a former California millionaire. Boudinot has been a striking character at the national capital lor years, uneot h ancestors was a professor in Harvard. Boudinot was a prominent chief in the Indian Territory but aroused the Losti element by advocating the opening of tl Territory to railroads. He was clerk of the House Committee on Public Landi gome years ago, and lately has been pn vate secretary 10 nonuor waitpr. o Arkaueas. Ha was an applicant for Corn mirsioner ot Indian Allaire, but warm approved Gen. Atkins's selection. H complexion is Spanish, hair long and now sightly gray from his lilty years of age, He is neocial toast in Washington, and beloved by everybody who is intimate with him. He is a welcome guest almost every houue in Washington. AMUSEMENTS. -'I'rauceMaaa lllmiiii." Mr. Lawrence Barrett began his enjiaga- nicnt at the Theater last night in Francisca ila Jlimim. 1 he dress circle anu parquette we:e well filled, though bv no means crowded, and, altogether, the audience was not such as the actor and play deserved Of the play, it is only necessary to say that it is the one suceesstul tragedy thep:ir.t. wars, and is familiar toitheafer- goers hre, having been given by Mr. Uivrctt during his visit sraaon before lal. Mr. Barrett was most cor dially .eceived, being called before the curtain uf tr each act. Mr. Barrett is a close s Mk-tit, a conscientious and pains taking w-Uf, and hence he always gives satiafiit lion. His voice, however, does not ii prove with age, and some of his mannerisms apparently become more muikcd wiih increasing years, though not eno;:gb lo detract from the general excel lence of his impersonation of the hunch backed "Lanciotto," which, taken as a whole, was a most iitiished and ar tistic performance. Louis James, as "Pepe, the jester," divided the honois with Mr. Barrett. The "Count Paolo" of Mr. F. O. Moseley was very good, though not fully up to the standard, while Miss Maria Wainwright as "Fraiiocsca," was, as asual, careful and conscientious, though cot as strong in some scenes cs she might bo. '1 he remainder of the stip)ort were good, but call for no &i-'-cial mention, Jttctulini will be the attraction to-cight. PHOPJSBTY TIlAySFUKS. Anna E. W?'.S Encouraging Ontlook for tbe Week TUe Favorites Beaten Great Interest in To-Daj'g SporU. The opening day of the spring meeting : the new Memphis Jockey Club was a success in spite of the dust which filled the air, the clouds which chased each other across the face of the son and the wind, which at times blew a gale. AU the trains which went out on the Memphis and Charleston railroad were filled, and the roads leading to the grounds from 1 'clock until after 2 o'clock, were strung with vehicles. Many of the turnouts were very stylish, and the scene about the grand stand was an animating one when the bell tapped for the flyers to take their placeB for the first race. Nothing had been neg lected by the club to odd to the comfort or convenience of those who attended, and expressions of satisfaction were universal The changes that have been made in the general arrangement of the grounds since last year were so manifestly for the better that they could not be otherwise than ap preciated. In addition to the auction and French pools Col. Bride had twelve book-makers on the ground, who, with their usual readiness to oblige every one, were willing and anxious to bet on any horse in the list. The genial colonel himself made it as lively as a good temper and a good voice could, and, considering that it was the first dav, the betting was very fair. Tbe crowd, however, was not exclusively in terested in the mere result, but the ma jority, took the liveliest interest in the horses themselves. A greater number of ladies than is usual on opening day were to be seen on the grand stand and in the stylish turnouts drawn np within the in closure. Many a pool was quietly pur chased, by messenger, by the latter, who preferred it, as a rule, to the usual wager of so many pairs of six-button kid gloves. Kea iv. it was not a Kid-glove day, out one of tho h-. "-s-st kind of work on the part of the field to beat the favorites, and it was successful, too. The outsidets, the chuckle- beads and the green ones pocKetea an 01 tho money. The Kaccs. For the first race, John D. Adams in trodueforv tcramble, for all ages, $o0u, o which Si.6 to second, three-quarteis of mile, there were nine entries. Pink Cot tage, Avery, Iord Clifton, Annie L., Tal levrand. tellowplay, Mona, Caslulia aud Hattie O. H. lxird Clifton Bold a de cided favorite until just before the bell tauped. when Fellow play crept np to first choice, aud in some pools Mona sold sec ond choice. Nearly all the betting waa done m the books, however, and in IB F:ench pools. Fellowplav seemed to b in splendid form and the good opinion in which he has always been held here was increased Py tbe splendid manter which he behaved when brought out for the start. The mare Pink Cottaee was exclusively backed by the outsider!", the book-makers offaring fifteen to one against her for a place and fitty to one to win. TIIE I IRST RACK. Tho start was not easily made, on account of the wind and the dust, which tt times obscured all ot the horses from the eager eves of those on the grand stand. When the word was finally given, however, a splendid start was made. Caaiillian could not keep up with the procession but the others ran almost neck and net foi the first iniariBr of a mile. Mona then began slowly foigiug ahead and wan neck and neck with Annie L. iellowplay moved np out of the bunch to her side and took Annie L.'s place at the turn, They cane thundering into the quarter. stretch, Mona and t ellowpiay side by side, Annie L. third and Lord Clifton fourth! Almost at once it becaina apparent that one of the short houses stood a go- chance to win, and thera were, loud yel lor Pink Cottage, who came beautiful! out of the field and made a splendid effort to pass Mona. Fellowplay couid not keep up trie pace heat hrst put on, ana tnougi the whip was freely applied, Mona won hands down, link Cottage eecond am Fellowplay a good third. French poolaon 1 ink Cottage lor a place paid oo. SECOND KATE. The second was a half-mile dash, Gas ton's Hotel Stages, for two year olds for $500, $100 to second. There were eight entries Stony Batier, Uncle Dan, Bessie Hinckley, Lucas, Tat Sheedy, Mattie Cor bett, Lonuford and Hattie D. II. The lat ter ente.red at the last moment. Mattie Corbett was a bit; favorite, and five to ona waa offered agamar, Ilottio 1. II. by the book-makers, wdh few tateers. There were some believers in Loneford, and Stony Batter had plenty of backers. Aa it was so short a distance it was regarded as any body's race, aud money was placed very evenly on all, with Williams's entries somewhat in the lead. Bruton's Stony Batter and Uncle Dan both seemed to be in splendid condition, and Hattie D. H. was in fine form. The start was a tedious one, all of tho horses so anxious to go that by the time they Btartcd they were well blown and badly harried. Stony Batter insisted on leavir.ii before tho word was given, and Bruton's other entry wanted to fly np the track in the other direc tion. A tine Biart was final y made, with Stony Batter in tho led, Pat .Sheedy second. They ran very well together for a hundred yards when Stony Batter beiran losing and Pat Sheedy sprang ahead to the front. Mattie Corbett never extri cated herself from tbe bench, and Uncle Dan had a very lively road to travel. Be"s;e Hinckley did some splendid work just before the turn was reached, jut dropped back again, and as they all swept into the quarter-stretch it waa seen that Hattie D. li. was pusliiii!; Pat Sheedy hard, while Longford had fallen back. The race down the quarter-etretch was as exciting as any one could have desired, the splendid woik Hattie was doing rais ing the enthusiasm of the crowd to the highest pitch. In a hundred yards of the string she passed Pat Sheedy like a flash and came in a winner by a length, Stony Batter a good third, the others strung out Thus the second favorito bit the dust. THIRD BACK. There wai perhaps less interest iu the third r.oe than in any one of the four. In the pools sold Ultimatum was favorite, with Filecn second choice. Coral, Morris & Patton'a entry, was scratched, and there were six starters. Ultimatum, Ida Hope, L'anana. Eileen, Nunnie Uentry and Tip sy. The raee was one and one-eighth miles, Memphis Oaka, for three-year-old fillies, $"f.0, $100 to Srond. Ti e start waa a fair one, but as usual the favorite failed to show np after the drum tapped, cither at the start or linish. Banana took the lead with Tipay second, but almost immedi ately fell back and gave place to Ida Hope, who was neck-and-neck with Tipsy when they passed nnder the string, Kileen upon her (juarter. Nan nie Gentry and Ultimatum never got within a reaching distance of the win ner. At the half mile Ida Hope led by a length, Tipsy pushing her hard as they swept up the grade, and the came posi tions were maintained as the; turned the last quarter and came pell-mell down the stretch, every whip being vigorously ap plied. Eileen made half a dozen magnili cent bounds and half way down the stretch gained a position by Ida Hope's side, kept it a moment and then fell back. Ida Hope won easily, Tipsy second and Kileen third. THE STEEPLECHASE. Hurdle races and steeplechases are al ways popular every where, and especially so in Memphis, but that witnessed yesterday afternoon was one of the prettiest ever seen on the Memphis Jockey Club grounds. It was over a short courpe, and tho starters were King Dutchman, Worth, Aurelian andllowdy Boy. The Dutchman was the favorite the night before, but Au relian had the Bympathy of the crowd at the track. Worth had his friends and liowdy Boy had lew backers. Those who put their money on him simply bet that a',1 the others would break their legs or necks. A good start waa had, Rowdy Boy and Areiian taking the first hurdle together slightly in advance of King Duchmari and Worth, who ran to gether. The second and third hurdles were taken in the came manner, but at that point all except King Dutchman flew the track, giving him 200 yards start before they could get straight again. Feel ing that be had the purse in his hands. King Dutchman's rider held him in and saved him for a final eft'ort, Rowdy Boy and Aurelian slowly gaindon him, and as they started out upon the track they were all together. Kowdy Boy looKed like a winner until his jockey leu in taking a hurdle, leaving Aurelian alone to wrestle with King Dutchman. Aurelian took the lead as soon as he touched the flat, bat King Dutchman, rested by the advantage he had gained, answered nobly to the call of his rider aud dashed in a winner by a length. TlicDax- Taking everything together, tho opening day was a saccoss. While there were no horses of extraordinary reputation, they were all good o-ien, and first-rate time was made, considering that the track was a lit tle heavy on account of the dust, and that the wind wa3 blowing hard. Fellowplay 'a name in the iitrt of entries for the first race gave it a good deal of interest, and Mattie Corbett's reputation at New Orleans made the money fly in the second. A steeple chase is always interesting, and so far as enjoyment, pure and simple, goes, it was the most attractive of yesterday 'a events. ttnmraary.
