reduction In tlio call loan rate to 4Vi
per cent wero tho two outstanding fea
tures of today's stock market. Consid
erable Irregularity niarked the move
ments of the other steel and Industrial
shares. There was little demand for
the rails, although the week-end ad
vices pointed to more favorable trans
portation conditions.
In r far as Incentive, thero was
practically nothing In the over-thc-week-end
developments to give much
encouragement for aggressive opera
tions on either side of the market. While
the vote of the railroad shopmen to
strike was viewed with some concern,
it was not believed any mich radical
step? would bo taken. The favorable
Clearing House statement, nlthotigh re
llccting to a large extent the financing
operations Incidental to the tax pay
ment, wn3 nevertheless accepted as fur
ther proof of the easing of the money
situation. This theory was substan
tiated in the 5 per cent renewal rnto for
call loans, which rate Immediately
dropped to 41A per cent, as there was a
larso supply at the renewal rate, while
rho demand KM orv llclit.
Different interpretations wero made
of tho steel mocmcnt, which had all
the earmarks of manipulative tactics.
It was looked upon by n good many as
further effort to attract an outside fol
lowing. Others wero of the opinion the
movement was prompted to facilitate
pool distribution in other parts of the
list. That wonderful trader who re
cently flopped from tho bear to the bull
sldo. was again given tho credit for
the success of the coup. It Is lamcnt
ablo and pitiful that no more convinc
ing argument can be found to account
for the progress of the constructive
movement. There always must be a
leader, but It Is a little short of nn
Insult to Intelligent peoplu to cram
down their throats day after day just
what this wonderful trader is doing.
Heavy buying of United States Steel
dominated the early trading. A block
of 4C0O shares changed hands at a gain
of IV points. Further heavy accumula
tion soon extended the advance to
almost 2 points. Crucible Steel,
Mexican Petroleum, General Asphalt.
Delaware. Lackawanna and Western
and Virginia -Carolina Chemical were
among the other strong stocks. De
clines extending from a large fraction
to 1 point from last week's finnl prices
were made bv Baldwin Locomotive,
Railway Steel Spring, Gulf State;,
Steel, Atlantic Gulf and Royal Dutch.
Baldwin more than recovered Its loss
in the first hour. Lackawanna. Repub
lic. Vanadium and Sloss Sheffield were
added to the stronger steels. Tiro
shares were actlvo and higher, but
motors and kindred Issues made little
headway. Tobacco Products, May De
partment Stores nnd some of the fopd
specialties strengthened. Food Prod
ucts, however, reacted to a new low
record after its early rally of l1-. points

sales nt 101 nnd 103. Philip Morris
sold, cx-divldcnd of 20 cents, nt 0V4
nnd OYj. Southern Coal nnd Iron was
quiet nt 2 nnd Sweets Compnny wns
virtually unchnnged. Farrell Conl wns
one of ths strong shares, selling at 13Vb
to 13, while Glen Alden Conl also wns

altogether featureless. The dealings
continued on the Mime limited srnle
but prices were generally better. The
big spurge In steel In the New York
market found partial reflection In
moderate dealings In that speculative
favorite with price running close to the
pnrity of the big board.
In the purely local list there wns
conspicuous lack of initiative with the
mnjority of the transactions made up
of small odd lots. There wns rontlnued
steady absorption of Pennsylvania ltail
road. The threatened strike of the
hopmen wns entirely Ignored. Electric
Storage Ilottery advanced to 10."1. on
few dealings. Lake Superior Corpora
tion also milled to 7. U. G. I., re
tained a good tone, but only a few
shnres of the stock changed hands.
Philadelphia Electric Issues remained
lirm. Few transactions were made in
Cambria Steel at 7."5. American Stores
