Hoppers Left Shortage of Feed But Irrigated Crops Did Well; Dairy Future. Miles City. Oct. 20.—Contrary to early indications this spring in Big Horn county the present range condi tions are poor, according »o G. F. In gersoll, vice president of the Commer cial National bank, who has just re turned from a trip to Hardin. The grasshoppers swept the Big Horn valley, mowing down the range grass and some of the small grain, and leaving a shortage of feed after their passing, and making it imperative for the stockmen to find other range for their livestock this fall and winter. One man who had 17,000 head of cattle a few months ago is selling the beef i and moving the remainder of his herd I to the old Dana range in the Little Big Horn. The irrigated crops have been ex-, cellent about Hardin and throughout the valley, and the farmers are now busily engaged in pulling their sugar beets, of which the farmers expect to ship about $200.000 worth to the sugar factory this fall. The beet hauling is hard on the roads of that region and as a consequence travel at present is irksome and dusty. Hardin hat: a good future, Mr. Inger soll declares but one big need there can be supplied only by introducing a couple of thousand head of dairy cows, which could be fed the surplus alfalfa hay, and the beet tops which go to waste there now. There is still plentyjif enthusiasm in Hardin over the proximity of the Soap creek field, and the rich oil strikes which have been made there this sum ] mer. The field is turning out well and ] new rigs are finding their way into I the field. The new Beauvais structure is coming to the front, and Miles City people and firms have some extensive and promising holdings there.
