OPERATORS ASK LAW REVISION ON MINE TAXES Slate Association Appoints Committee to Bring About Change. j " Revision of the state law which pre j scribes methods by which valuations j are determined in assessing mines for ! tax purposes will be sought by the ' Montana State Coal Mine Operators' 1 association through a special committee j nnme( j a t Billings Tuesday, according to Fre(J Sturm * f thç firm of Sturm j & Yaw. Mr. Sturm and several other i Cascade county operators returned i from Hillings Wednesday evening, after attending the annual convention of thi association. Differs From Federal "Methods followed in arriving at val uations are not the same as found most practical by the government in fixing federal taxes." said Mr. Sturm TUnrsday, "and the operators are strongly persuaded to the opinion that coal mines are paying more than their share of taxes. We are going to ask for a change. The coal mining industry has been compelled to meet two great obstacles in the last few years and we think the operators should be relieved of an unjust tax burden. In addition to withstanding the business depres • sion, mines have experienced a business j slump because of several mild winters i in succession." ! Cascade Mines Represented Delegates to the convention from Cascade county were Mr. Sturm. George Wilson of the Carbon Coal company, II. W. Wilson of the Cotton wood Coal company. George Merkle of the Merkle Coal company and John McClure of the Nelson Coàl company. ; The convention did not consider labor ! matters growing out of the recent fed ! eral court ruling against the "check j off" system, and operators who at ] tended stated that Montana probably will not be involved in the controversy. Labor disputes are usually adjusted in the eastern district and negotiations be tween operators and miners are seldom held in the west, except in the event of u nation-wide movement. The question of removing the city and county health office, now located in the Stanton bank building, to the I city market building, was discussed at the meeting of the board of health here Thursday morning. Final action in the matter, according to Dr. G. A. Fuson, secretary of the board, was held in abeyance pending definite action in re gard to housing all city offices. A re ported advance contemplated by the county in rentals for city offices in the court house brought about a somewhat unsettled situation, said Dr. Fuson, and for the present the health offices will continue to occupy their present quarters. Chairman Denies Increase County Commissioner B. C. Johnston, when interviewed as to the proposed advance in rental by the county, said he knew of no such action and that the board as a whole was not considering a raise. A communication received by Dr. Fuson from C. Harry Scherf, su perintendent of the schools at- Cas cade, was read, the import of which was a strong recommendation that a county nurse be employed for regular public health work in the schools of Cascade county. lfrofessor Scherf said that his ob servation of the operations of public health nurses and the results of their efforts were such as to convince him of the efficacy of such an officer, and he wished to voice his opinion in favor of the permanent employment of a nurse. The question was discussed and finally taken under advisement. Endorse Christmas Sales A resolution endorsing the sale of Christmas seals in this city and county for the establishment of a fund to main tain the Montana Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis was unanimously passed.
