“The Long, Hot Summer” Here Sunday; Faulkner Story Probes Human Passions Jerry Wald’s production of WH liam Faulkner’s ‘The Long, Hot Summer,” Twentieth Century-Fox Cinemascope, De Luxe Color pres entation, which opens at the Or pheum Theatre Sunday, examines human problems and passions with % * probing eye. The producer of “Peyton Place” which Kodiak audiences relished a few months ago, Wald .chose a brilliant cast for his story of love, hate and violence in the Deep South. These are Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Anthony Fran ciosa, Orson Welles, Lee Remick and Angela Lansbury. The picture tells the story of the Varner family of Frenchman’s Bend, Mississippi, and particularly •of the effect of a brutal “strong man” on the lives of his family and their friends. This man is played by Orson Welles, as Will Varner. The comedy aspects of the pro duction are said to be among some of the funniest scenes ever filmed. The picture was directed by Mar tin Ritt. Today Brian Donlevy in “Escape From Red Rock" is cast as a vicious heavy without mercy or scruple ex cept for one surprising weakness which gives the production an un usual twist, according to advance releases. This is A Reg a! scope western drama released -by Twentieth Cen tury-Fox, with murder, a lynching party, Apaches on the rampage, and the terror of one man and his band of outlaws furnishing the excitement. Tuesday and Wednesday Danny Kaye makes a new depar ture in the type of role he plays in the picture “Me and the Colonel,” which combines humor and a sense of humanity. Kaye plays a refugee, escaping the Nazi invasion of Poland, finds his life once more jeopardized in Paris, as the onrushing Panzer division threatens the city. Ac quiring a Rolls Royce of ancient vintage, but unable to drive, he teams up with a haughty Polish colonel who can. The adventures of these two and beautiful girl friend of the colonels, as they jour ney along, makes for good enter tainment. Cbrt Jurgens and Nicole Maurey star with Kaye. Others in the cast are Francoise Rosay, Akim Tamir off, Martita Hunt and Alexander Scour by. Screenplay was by S. N. Behrman and George Froeschel. Thursday and Friday For those who think they will never get there and for those who would like to have an inkling of what they Will see when they do, the Walt Disney production “Dis neyland, U.S.A.” in Technicolor, should be of interest. Orpheum Theatre manager John Fletcher rates it high in entertain ment, as he also rates the compan ion picture “The Silent World/* The latter offers some excellent photography by French camera men, in Technicolor and under water!
