We’d like to make the Afognak trip sometime, get up to Anchor age and perhaps take the train to Fairbanks in late summer. In the meantime the children keep busy with hobbies and just being out of-doors. We feel sometimes they overdo movies so we have a new rule—no more movies until they read a book a week. It works out very well and of course we like to give them enough work to keep them from getting bored, and be cause they should do it. We dis cussed a dishwasher but they, themselves, decided we didn’t need one, really.” Both girls take piano lessons; we asked Mrs. Gotch if this were also her interest? “No, it might have been years ago; my father RELIANCE RADIO OF KODIAK Phone 5921 days, 5822 evenings or call Radio KXJ66 for MARINE AND AERONAUTICAL EQUIPMENT RADIO SERVICE MECCA LOUNGE & 49 ROOM The Friendliest Place in Town The Finest Liqueurs and the Best Mixed Brinks • DINING ROOM OPEN DAILY Serving Full Course Dinners 5 p. m. to 1 a.m. SUNDAY SPECIALS Prime Ribs of Beef—Roast Turkey FAMILY ENTRANCE On Harborview Avenue • Come in any Wednesday for SMORGASBORD All you can eat, $3 — 6 ’til 11 p.m. FOR RESERVATIONS. I gradu ated from St. Louis University and then taught school and worked toward my Master’s in education at night. In the summer I did play ground work and had just been promoted to supervisor when I met Bob. He was a practicing at torney and took a summer job: I was his boss. I never got the Mas ter’s degree because we were mar ried and I no longer cared about school. “Bob went into the Navy in 1941. We both loved the Navy from the very beginning and we have been happy he stayed in. I don’t think he has ever missed his law practice.” CDR Gotch was a fighter pilot in the Pacific during World War II and in the Korean War he served in the Badoeng Strait. The only time we might have gone far away on a tour, as a family, was when Bob was Assistant Flag Secretary in Honolulu. Our boy was less than a year old and seriously ill. Be cause it was a touch and go situ ation Bob was transferred back to Washington in about six months. “We did enjoy one tour in par ticular, at Chincoteague, Virginia. We got to know so many local people. One family we liked es pecially were the Beebes about whom Marguerite Henry wrote in her book, Misty of Chincoteague. You know, it is the story of one of the wild ponies on the island, but there is a great deal about the townspeople; we knew many of the ones she wrote about. “Well. I told you I wasn’t ex citing; I’ve led such an uneventful life and I haven’t a list of talents like many others.” Some fortunate people have an unwitting and valuable talent for being delightful; in their company one’s day is brightened and the world is a more pleasant place. Gertrude Gotch is one of these people. SPOON BREAD 1 quart milk 1 cup yellow cornmeal 1 cup butter or oleo, melted 2 tbs sugar 4 eggs separated Heat milk in double boiler. Add cornmeal gradually.
