Two Men Qualify As Sailor, Chief Of Month On NS Two men on the Naval Station, Paul M. Masco, Electronics Tech. 3rd class, and Bert Wortham, Chief Hospital Corpsman, were cited by Capt. E. C. Smith in ceremonies held Oct. 6, and named “Sailor of the Month” and "Chief of the Month,” respectively. Masco was commended for his “constant endeavor to improve him self, militarily and professionally.” The citation continued: “You have performed your job as petty officer in charge of the Naval Station mo bile communications facilities in an exemplary manner. Under your su pervision, the installation of new radio equipment of an improved design has been completed in rec ord t'me, with a minimum of inter ruption of service.” Masco, a native of Yonkers, New York, has been in Kodiak since Jan., 1961. He and Mrs. Wortham live on the Naval Station. They have three children, James, Devia, and Mark. Both Masco and Wortham are now members of the “Top Twelve Club” and each will have his name inscribed on the Top Twelve Club plaque, on view in the Navy Ex change lobby on the Naval Station. Gruening, Egan Main Speakers At Convention Sen. Ernest Gruening, U. S. Sen ator from Alaska, and Gov. William A. Egan will be the two principal speakers at the League of Alaskan Cities convention to be held in An chorage, Oct. 25-28. Gov. Egan will be the keynote speaker at the opening session of the convention. Sen. Gruening will speak at the convention dinner to be held Friday, Oct. 27. Among the subjects up for dis cussion at the convention sessions will be “Municipal Rights To and Uses of Land and Natural Re sources.” “Revision and Refine ment of Municipal Codes and Incor porated Laws,” and “Planning and Financing Public Works and Eco nomic Development.” Mrs. Clique On Police Force Mrs. Norma Clique has joined the Kodiak Police Department, and will serve as desk officer and ma tron. Officer Terry Wolf has left the department. In her capacity as Police Matron, Mrs. Clique will si't in on juvenile cases as well as the other duties of her office. Court Case Arrested on a charge of negli gent driving. Clifford L. Davis was fined $100 and his driver’s license recommended suspended for 30 days. A similar fine was meted out to Charles L. McLinn who was brought into court on the same charge. In other Court cases, Victor S. Carlough, charged with being drunk, was given a 15-day sentence, wihich was suspended; two others, Sverre Nilsen and Barbara Slaton, arrested on similar charges, for feited bail of $25 each. In one other case, Lawrence C. Smith was fined $25 when booked on a charge of a minor being intoxicated. Griffin Memorial Births A daughter, Elena Ruth, weigh ing 6 lbs. 10 ozs., was born on Sep tember 29 to Donna and Walter Nestell. A daughter, Amy Alicia, weigh ing 7 lbs. 8 ozs., was born on Octo ber 2 to Dorothy and Robert Grilli. A daughter, Jacqueline Lou, weighing 9 lbs. 8 ozs., was born on October 7 to Virginia and Jack Kvasnikoff. A daughter, Sandi Marie, weigh ing 8 lbs. 4 ozs., was born on Oc tober 8 to Mary and Walter McFar land. A son, Paul Eugene, weighing 9 lbs. 8 ozs., was born on October 12 to Eloise and Lloyd McKinley. STANDARD OIL BUYS LAND Standard Oil Company was the lone bidder on 438 acres of land on the Kenai. Its purchase offer of $250,000 was accepted. Land use as shown in the bid was for a refinery site. Naval Station Births Twin babies, a son, Robert De Largy, weighing 6 lbs. 6 ozs., and a daughter, Mary Ann, weighing 5 lbs. 3 ozs., were born on October 1 to Gathleen and Kenneth E. Hill, Lt., USN. A daughter, Valerie, weighing 5 lbs. 9Vfe ozs., was born on October 7 to Shirley Pauline and Jesse L. Downey, AT2, USN. A son, Raymond Andrew, weigh ing 5 lbs. 1% ozs., was born on October 9 to Betty Jean and Aaron Allen Dalton, CS2, USN.
