To Ground Civil Aircraft October 14 All commercial and private air craft throughout Alaska and the rest of the United States and Can ada will be grounded for 12 hours October 14, Federal Aviation Agency officials reminded the fly ing public today. Suspension of all civil flying ac tivity for the 12-hour period is to clear the skies for “Sky Shield II,” an exercise of the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD) to test the nation’s defense. Last year a similar NORAD exercise, “Sky Shield I” was conducted for a six-hour period September 9-10. The exercise will start at 1 p. m., Eastern Daylight Time, October 14, and end at 1 a. m., EDT, October 15. The 12-hour period in Alaska will be Saturday, October 14 from 7 a. m., to 7 p. m., Alaskan Stand ard Time; 9 a. m., until 9 p. m., Pa cific Standard Time; 8 a. m., until 8 p. m., Yukon Standard Time; and 6 a. m., until 6 p. m., Bering Stand ard Time. All of the U. S. scheduled do mestic and international air car rier fleet, approximately 1,800 air craft, will remain on the ground during the period. About 125,000 air passengers will be grounded as well as more than 70,000 general aviation aircraft. The exercise will also ground the U. S. operation of all foreign air carriers during the 12-hour period. Exercise requirements call for complete freedom of movement at all altitudes, in both descending and ascending patterns, by United States and Canadian military air craft, in addition to a small num ber of British bombers. Also ex tensive radar and communications jamming efforts will be made by bombers simulating attacking forces against air defense facilities, FAA air traffic control radar, and other electronic guidance equip ment. The PNA plane from Anchorage will arrive here at 9:35 p. m. on that date, and will depart Kodiak at 10:00 p. m., according to local agent, Ray Martin. The downtown office will be closed all day, Oct. 14, opening at 6 p. m. and closing at 11 p. m., ac cording to Martin. Mirror classifieds bring results.
