— Kodiak Kapsuiles -- (By Bill Mason) (Continued From Page 1) on “Professional Salaries for Pro fessional Teachers in the current issue of the Alaska Teacher. * * • » And like scores of others here in Kodiak we hate to see the Rev. Lewis White leave the com munity. Always pleasant, it was always enjoyable to talk to him and do business with him—and that comes from a Presbyterian or something. * * * * Apparently Rep. Gil Jarvela will be Kodiak’s only representative at the official inauguration of Gov. Bill Egan. Earlier an Anchorage party leader had written down here re questing the names of 10 Kodiak citizens who should be invited to the affair. The party leaders were offended, and said that if that was all they were going to ask then don’t bother. The usual Democratic approach. Always two battles, one with them selves and the main event with the Republicans. * * * * Judy Merrill, known as Alas ka’s Songbird and a former resi dent of Kodiak where she worked as an entertainer as well as at one of the local stores, writes about her “Around the World Trip” from Vienna. i Judy says she was in Vienna for Christmas and spent New Year’s in Moscow. She also wrote that she went through the Krem lin, seeing many sights. She vis ited Ireland where she kissed the Blarney Stone and later went to Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Austria. She will return through Berlin and Holland. * * * * Sometime or other you have seen those slogan cards on the wall. Well here are a few new ones to add to your collection: My Girl is the Kind Men Look at Twice (They can’t believe it the first time). Do You Suffer from Acid Indi gestion? You Do. (Well stop drink ing acid). My Boss Told Me I Oughta Go Places (In fact he even mentioned one of the places). Our New Hair Restorer is the Greatest Discovery of the Age (It doesn’t grow new hair, it just shrinks your head so your own hair will cover it). * * * * And since we have left that small state below alone for quite a spell, guess we had better get with it again. Seems like a Texas man was bragging on the “bigness” of everything in Texas was sur prised when an “Okie” stepped up and agreed with him saying: “Yes, that’s sure right, every things’s big in Texas! Why, I once knew a Texan who was so big they couldn’t find a coffin big enough to bury him in when he died!” “And what did they do?” asked the surprised Texan. “Well,” came the answer, “they just let the air out of him and buried him in a shoe box.” * * * * Up on “Mortgage Row” in Ko iiak, the Republicans are claiming that the trouble with the national sconomy is that there isn’t any. • • * * KODIAK POEMTRY A fisherman’s quartet — first St. James The Fisherman Episcopal Church North Blvd. Holy Communion 8 A.M. It was pointed out that the re cent malicious structural damage by vandals to aircraft could easily lead to the pilot’s death should he not notice the damage prior to take-off, and could lead to other deaths should the airplane crash on take-off over the City. Further, stealing survival gear from air planes could very easily mean the difference between survival or death should a forced landing be required. A “vigilante” committee was formed for the purpose of patrol ing and guarding the area in which the planes are located with a view toward apprehending the vandals and thieves and bring ing them before the courts for tuna, second tuna, barracuda, and bass—singing most of the time on porpoise—rest of the time just for the halibut. It was brought out that Chapter 86, Session Laws of Alasfca, 1962 provides that City curfew laws are in effect for a radius of twenty miles surround ing the City and that any peace officer or private person may make an arrest. Letter to the Editor WILL MISS REV. WHITE I read in the paper that Pastor White leaves. I for one am sorry. He’s a good man of God. I feel bet ter when he tells how to live. I always feel welcome even when I have no suit to wear. Sometimes we don’t thank peo ple for how they help others. He makes all welcome and makes them feel better how to live. Kodiak loses a good man of God. Maybe we selfish, too much. Maybe more good people stay if they are treated right—not only fishermen. I feel like this, too. I say thanks to the man who helps me and others. Pete S. From a boat which does not come to town very often. Can’t write good, but my heart knows. Mirror classifieds bring results. First Tax Checks Mailed By State The first 250 refunds on 1962 returns from the State’s individual income tax went into the mail this past week, Acting Revenue Com missioner Robert D. Stevenson said today. The refund checks, representing over-payment of the tax, total $6, 891.59 an average of $27.57 each. In making the announcement, Stevenson urged persons entitled to refunds to file returns promptly. “Right now we are in a position to handle returns promptly,” he said. “Later on, as we near the fil ing deadline, the greater number of returns will result in stretching out the time required between re ceipt of the return and issuance of the refund.” LUTHERAN COMMUNION SERVICE Next Service EVERY THIRD WED.
