GUY A. MILLER. Circuit Judge. A True Copy: T. P. Dunne, Deputy Clerk, Stanley High Holds Crowd Spellbound Speaker Paints Word Pictures Os Dictators Br GLADYS MILLS .. It was our pleasure to witness one of the greatest exhibition* of 'quick trigger thinking and rapid fire oratory of our brief career in the appearance of Stanley High at Plymouth Congregational church last Sunday night. Mr. High Is Uist known as the author of "Black Omens." a series of articles on the present day Negro, which ran In the “Saturday Evening Past" last summer. Contrary to our belief, that he would talk along similar lines, he rather cho*e to give terse, and In some instances very humorous thumb-nail portrait* of, fcistory making men of today. The question of color was not even remotely touched .upon; either by Mr. High or the persons who questioned him during the Forum period. The very representative group present was not sensitive or radical in its quizzing, but confined itself wholly to world affairs and na tional issues, for which we could have kissed each personally; and v e have the words from Mr. High's own lips in an interview after the lecture "that he was greatly sur prised, having come prepared for a good ’lambasting" and finding in stead just a very intellectual gath ering of American citizens inter ested primarily in the salvation of democracy. Stanley High is able to give lit tle known facts about outstanding personalities, having interviewed personally, most of them. He cited Stalin, as being the most ruthless and hard-boiled of the dictators; “Mussolini” he says, “is the bad boy of the trio, playing at being hard-boiled to keep pace with Hit ler and Stalin;” to Mr. High, Hit [ ler is a religious phenomenon, and a positive idol to his people, who display his picture along with that of Christ, the German nation looks upon him as something holy. He calls President Roosevelt the most dramatic of the Democratic leaders, except perhaps Nevii Chamberlain, who he says is almost forced against his will into a life of diplomatic service. He further thinks that Mr. Roosevelt will un doubtedly run for office a third time, chiefly because he loves the Job of being President, contrary to others who have found the running of this country a great task. He thinks President Roosevelt gets a kick and recreation out of it and will only reluctantly remove him self from 1700 Pennsylvania ave nue. Further, he thinks he will be urged by certain very powerful factions to run again. All in all, Mr. High’s talk was very enlightening. He certainly has a wealth of knowledge of world affairs and other things of great general interest at his finger-tips. Seen in the audience were Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Waundless . . Dr. I. H.
