"Tops" Among Sellers Tops .among the sellers when final results had been tabulated were Charles Kelsey, winner of the streamline bicycle, first prize. Charles had sold a total of 3.438 papers to pile up 10,304 points to w.n first place in the city-wide as well as district competition. Second prize, a Pee Wee radio went to David Scales who sold 2.199 papers to pile up 6.597 points to second place James Thigpen won a smart boy's wrist watch for third prize by sell ing 1.380 papers to. chalk up 4.140 ners were members of the Central East district. Uptown District Wilbur Edgar won the district pirze in the Uptown area with a total of 2,106 points; Bennie Moss second with 1 956 points. Hulbert Shaw, third with 1.845 points. Mr. Young and the newlywedded Mr. and Mrs. Ber- j trand Hudson. 226 Cases Os ‘Polio’ Reported During the period of January 1 to August 19. inclusive. 226 resi dent cases of poliomyelitis have been reported, while 223 non-resi dent casei have been hospitalized in Detroit. The majority of the cases (163 of 226« thus far fall into the dge gjoup below ten. In the age group 0-4. there are 70 cases, while in the age group 5-9 there is a to’al of 93. Pa tients'lh the age group 10-14 num ber 43 and in the age group 15-19 there are 13 cases. Four cases fall irT the age group 20-24 and three cases in the age group 25-34. By age groups deaths arc as follows: two in the 0-4 group; six in the 5-9 group; and one each in the 10-14. 15-19 and 20-34 age groups. The oc curence ol death among the male species is more frequent than among the female. The actual num ber of cases is for male 129. female 97 Surveys have shown that more have been reported from the North eastern section of the city than any other section Figures are 77 for the northeast and 69 from the south eastern section, while to date only 46 case* have been reported from : the northwest and 34 from the . southwestern areas of the city, an 1 area ’in which poliomyelitis has been most prevalent in recent j years. I Paralysis has decreased. 2 WHITE MEN ON SPREE ARE SHOT; GET AID Two white men were rushed- to receiving hospital last week for treatment of gunshot wounds al leged to have been inflicted by two -as yet unidentified Negro men, police records disclosed. Henry Artanowicz. 20, white, of 13264 Sparling street, was treated for a wound to the right flank. His condition was reported as tem porarily serious. John Kachanow ski. 23 and white, of 11687 Moran street was treated for a gunshot wound to the abdomen. His condi tion was reported serious by hos pital attaches. Police learned that the two white 4T.en.met Edward Watts. 34. of 960 Frederick street at the corner of Frederick and Hastings streets about 11 p.m., last Friday. The two men asked Watts, so the story goes, where Ro<s' place was located. Ap parently Watts did not oknow the particular place they had in mind as the three of them finally went to an address at 700 Frederick street. Apartment 6. where they had several drinks. While at this address, two colored men came in and joined Watts and the two white men. police records disclosed. L3ter the two white men and Watts left the Frederick street apartment and went to 1354 E. Warren avenue where Watts went to the front door and held a con versation with a Negro woman While standing on the porch the two men Watts and his two white friends had met on Frederick street came up and ordered tha woman to open the door before she got shot. Apparently objecting to the tone of voice used by the speaker to the woman of the house, Watts is charged with striking the speaker with his fist. A fight then ensued between Watts. Artanowicz. Kacha nowski and the two unidentified Negro men. during which the shoot ing took place injuring Watts' two white companions. Police took ten persons to the homicide squad office for question ing concerning the shooting. Elizabeth Thomas. 37. landlady at 1354 E Warren avenue. Rebecca Young. 34. also of this address, were questioned by police as were Penny Smith. 25. and Iva Graham, 25. of 700 Frederick street. Apartment 6. Following the investigation by police. Edward Watts. Woodrow Ford and Lucy Rembert were held pending a complete investigation into the shooting. Robert Wilburn. 28. of 323 E. Forest avenue, was arrested by Sergeant Pickings and Allard and held pending an investigation of an assault with intent to kill in the shooting of the two white men at 1354 E. Warren avenue last week. Pilgrim Baptist Church -—Last Friday night, the Metropoli tan Baptist church worshipped with the Pilgrim Baptist church and Rev. L. C. Collins delivered the mes sage. His sermon was based on •How To Obtain An Everlasting Life." Sunday was high day at the church and many children were in attendance at Sunday school serv ices. Mr. Whitley gave a general review of the lesson. At 11 o'clock. Rev J. F. Hendricks, pastor, brought an inspiring sermon from the subject. "Contrary Winds.” Acts 27:4.
