PAGE TWO Must Face Race Issue,’ Says Wilberforce Prexy ‘Allies DR. C. WESLEY WARNS ALL OF WAR REACTION Speaks Before 3,000 In Public Hall In Cleveland WHSERTORCE. Ohio Ursinj his interracial audience of 3,000 assembled on the Armistice day at the Public Music Hall in Cleve land “to face particularly the issue of race; to accept the challenfe Which is found in iis many-sided aspects; and to declare themselves openly for the freedom of the in dividual person, the equality of op portunity for all peoples, the con xersion of peoples from potential liabilities into active assets, and the realisation on the part of all peo ples that rights are also accom panied by duties" President Charles H. Wesley of W:lbert>rcc univer eity, declared that r uch an asser- j tion woulc be one means of spread-, j ing democracy to all the world and the ultimate participation in their own governments by the peoples of Asia, Africa, the Americas and the Islands cf ijic Set. Reviewing the fuming points lit the present world war from its be ginnings in 1939. Dr. Wesley assert ed that "the final turning point in this war will be when the united nations ftce the issue of race. There was a wide gulf between the war GOV. - GENERAL FELIX EBOUE '£f i-'j! fl Who from his headquarters at Brazzaville, French Equatorial Africa, is ruler of a vast territory, the principal holdings of the “Free French ’ in Africa. Highly trained in French universities, former governor of Guadelupe, in the West Indies, a native of French Guiana, he has proven one of France’s most capable colonial administrators. Intensely race loyal, he has instituted many reforms and educational programs in Africa. Governor Eboue sent the above picture to the Associated Negro Press himself. ■ aims of our leaders and the de sires of the peopl* in 1918 when President Woodrow Wilson enun ciated the famous ‘Fourteen Points No fault was found with them, and they were regarded as our objec tives, but when the war terminated and Armistice day came, the Amer ican people seemed to forget the idealism of their leader. Are we sure that our present program will be a different one’ If our aims to create a League of Nations and a World Court for the nations failed then, while the popular will trailed behind, how can we be confident now that the ‘Four Freedoms’ are meant for all peoples and races every where? •'We seem still indifferent to any other purpose except the general outcome of winning the WAR. al though some of us have thought of winning a real PEACE, whatever this may mean. We wanted to make the world safe for democracy when we entered the first’sworld war even though we had not f madc democracy safe either for itself or for the world. Our leaders would spread our freedom over the world, but will we, the people, permit our leaders to run ahead of us, as we did in the former world war, and Then so hamper their endeav ors through reactionary influences that we shall cause thes» efforts to collapse and find ourselves return ing to our old processes of exploi tation, subjugation, self-seeking greed, Anglo-Saxon pride, and un perialism? Oniy a resurgence of the popular will to build a new world and the acceptance of these purpose can leaa to an actual new order o' democracy. For, even now, there are reactionaries who -oniy trwart the winning -of the war in order to plan to return to the status quo ante bellum just as they did in tho first world war.” Continuing. Dr. Wesley suggest ed the adoption of the following J crusading program that will help ' us not to break fairh with those asleep in Flanders field. 1. Let us unite all liberals, and : •11 colors, creeds, and conditions for the mrintenance of a democ racy in fact and not only word. 2. Let us support all organua- j tions recognizing the principle of equality of opportunity for all men ] and all women. 3 Let us recognize the respons bility to support democracy by j Thought, word, and deed, for only thus can freedom continue to live ; 4.
