SATURDAY, MAY 15, 1943 #^(^y//SOCIETV Annual Deskadesis Held By Sphinxmen Mother’s Day Large Crowd In Attendance At Social Affair Leroy Smith’s Band Furnished Music By GLADYS MILLS The Sp-hinxmen, pledgees of Al pha Phf Alpha fraternity, came through with flying colors, on Mother's Day evening, when they held their 14th annual Deskadesis, at Labor Temple. Leroy Smith fur nished the music. A large crowd of civilians, and men in uniform of all the branches of the service made tip the gay affair. The decorations were black and yellow, balloons in profusion, of course, rfnd at one end of the hall a large bronze Sphinx head, at the ether, a large black and yellow Sphinx, banner. Sphinxmen Hold Forth During Intermission During the intermission the Sphinxmen and the Alpha bro 4 .' gathered and sang their so.igs. sev eral service men of other chap ters joining the circle and lifting their voices in the Alpha hymn. A note of humor was added in the presence of the seven “dogs' (Sphinxmen on probation*. The.se were all dressed in double-breast'd tuxedos with black and yellow bow ties, and black and yellow socks, to add the final touch they carried bricks, colored black and yellow. Chicken a la mushrooms, in pat‘y shells, potato chips, cucumber and tomato salad, hot rolls, coffee, and delicious home-made ice cream and cookies constituted the appetizing luncheon. • Contract bridge furnished the en tertainment for the afternoon. The victor* were Mrs Jennie Page who wiv a very smart umbrella, and Puby Chambers who was awarded a gorgeous lapel pin. Business was omitted for the evening and were played instead. The hostess served a tasty dinner which was enjoyed by all present. Mrs Elizabeth Ward is still ill at her home. Jackson Mayor ‘Explains’ Jim Crow Service Center JACKSON Mis?— In order that there be a thorough understanding of the project set up for colored service men here by the Federal Security Administration and the city. Mayor Walter A. Scott recent ly called together a group of citizens in a special meeting at the newly renovated service center. After telling f purpose of the meeting, the mayor explained that the new service center had come into being after two agencies had been contacted and the city of Jackson had accepted the build ng and the plans for operation. Ho stated that the one and only pur pose of the center is to provide wholesome recreation and enter tainment for colored soldiers, and that this center would have the same working program as the sfll diers’ center in *he city auditorium for white soldiers. The facilitie* of the new colored service men's center are complete and directly in line with service clubs all over the country. She will marry Eddie Gifford around the middle of June. * * * Perhaps you know by now that the former Phygenau Bailey, De troit's own talented dance artist, has forsaken her career and studies at Wayne and is now the wife of Staff Sgt. Charles W. Woodruff of the lOOtji Coast Artillery (A A.) She has been residing in Saulta Ste. Marie. Mich., for the pari few months, and is now on her way to the Southland to join her husband there. Mrs. Woodruff is quite ac tive in the A.W.V.S. and staff work for the American Red Cros*. She stopped in Detroit to visit a few days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce D. Bailey. Her many friends showered her with gifts and felicitations. * * * The Owl Bridge club held its regular bi-weekly meeting in the home of Mr and Mrs Edward L Johnson of Cadillac avenue.
