Despite the rationing of gas and tires, and crowded transo irtatinn there were more teachers attendance and more money raised than in the previous years ’>e theme of the a.-sociation was “Cc.ll To Service,” ami many of the discussions and panels were pertainin* to the war. The increase of salary and length of school terms were discussed by J T Gilliam, Little Rock, and Mrs. A M Strong of Marianna. The association purchased $460 worth of US. bond* and S2OO was allowed for scholarships of SSO each for students in senior college. The departmental meeting was well attended. Dr J E. Wslker, president National Negro Business League, made the principal ad dress. F.d McCustion, supervisor Negro Schools, l-ad charge of the panel discussions. The reports of Miss Sadie E. Thomasson, executive secretary and T. W Coggs, treraurer, were pre sented Floyd Brown, president and all other officers were re-elected. The association will meet at the A M. and N college in 1944 The sum of $336 was appropriated to the Little Rock Teachers association to help in the law suit for equalization of salary. The philan thropist's recent gift of $50,000 to the endowment campaign brings her contributions to the college to more than $700,000 in the past decade. Her gifts have made possible two dormitories, a science building, heating plant, and the chapel and little theatre. Rev A. Edward McWilliams professor of religion and associate professor in the de partment of sociology at Texas col lege has been notified to report at Harvard university. Cambridge Mass, the first week in May. having ' been appointed to a chaplainship | in the U. S. army. McWilliams is to relinquish hi? duties here Friday, April 30. and 1 will soon depart thereafter for j Harvard university to undergo spe cial training for the chaplainship Rev. McWilliams is a native of Newton. Kas., where he graduated from the Newton high school. He later attended Lane college Jack son. Tenn., from which he graduated with the bachelor of arts degree He then attended Gammon Seminary 'one year. From Gammon he went , to Yale university where he studied it the School of Religion, graduat ' :ng with the bachelor's degree from , Yale university. After completing his theological training. McWilliams pastored the St. John C M E. church, Hutchinson, Kas.; he also served churches at Wewoka, Okla., and Oklahoma City Okla He came to Texas college in ! 1940 where he served first as dean if men, and later as professor of religion and associate professor in the department of sociology at Texas college. Benning, Mother’s Day FORT BENNING, Ga. (Special)—Mothers of four teen soldiers at Fort Bon ninfc, coming from tlmir homes in 10 different states, will be guests of the Post. May through May 9. for the special Mother's Day program w u ich has been arranged by Brig. Gen. Walter S. Fulton, commandant of the Post. One of the two Chicago mothers will be Mrs. Alice B. McConico. 3009 South State street Mrs McConico is the mother of Sgt. John T. Mc- Conico of Company U. of the pro visional truck regiment. Elected by lottery, the mothers have sons in the various units here All of the expenses for the railroad trip to Fort Benning and home again, as well as for their stay here, are to be defrayed by the chap lains' fund. The ten different states which will be represented on the Mother's Day program are Tennessee. Texas, Maryland, Illinois. New Jersey. Ohio. Connecticut. New York, Florida, and Arkansas. Two moth ers are coming to the Post Lorn Maryland, two from Chicago, two from Tennessee, and two from Now York. Scheduled to arrive at the post on Friday, the mothers will be met at the Columbus railroad station by their sons and special service officers of the units to which their sons arO assigned. The mothers then will he taken to the Main Post where Lt. Col Frank M Thompson, chief of chaplains, will welcome them and assign them quarters in the various hostess houses. Special Sunday Service Friday night, thorp will be a spe rial dinner in a service club for the mothers and their sons. Saturday morning, the mothers will have an opportunity to get a real look into how the Army teaches its cooks to run a kitchen. During the morning, after break fast. all of the mothers will be taken on a tour of Fort Henning at which time they‘will view the military might which is training on the reservation. The mothers will inspect the Infantry School, the Parachute school, and the 10th Ar mored Division. On Sunday morning, a special outdoor church service will be staged in Doughboy stadium, the large football stadium at t.ie post.
