(ANP) Refuting the ante-bellum claim that segre gation is a preventative of race friction between white and colored people. Ben Thompson, white, vet eran of two wars and winner of the Distinguished Service cross, re vealed his experiences of complete harmony and mutual understand ing between white and colored sol diers whenever the racial bars were let down, in an exclusive interview recently. Thompson, a 28-year-old warrior, has proved himself a hero more than once on the battlefield. A resi dent of Sunnyside, Long Island, he is now recovering from the last of two wounds he has received fight ing for the ideals of democracy. He is also co-chairman of the new na tional interracial organization, American youth for democracy. “Wherever the color bars are let down, as in the overseas hospitals, there is an unmarred record of fine mutual relations between white and ,Negro troops," he declared, as he painted a brief picture of his ex periences as a soldier, a civilian and a communist. “Not only do the soldiers in hospitals live without any segregation—the white order lies take care of Negro soldiers and Prof. Says Race Bias * Is NatiokfeMkn&ce SYRACUSE, N. Y. <ANP> -4 When Dean M. Lyle Spencer of Syracuse university school of jourA nalism addressed a meeting of the Farm bureau in the Hotel Syracuse last week, he took the opportunity to denounce spiritual disunity and warn his listeners of the dangers of racial antagonism. "We have racial antagonisms that break into the open on occasion and are present with us every where." Dean Spencer declared. “Recently 1 picked up a newspaper giving an account of how Roland Hayes, the famous Negro tenor, was beaten up and jailed In Rome. Ga., because his wife made the mistake of going into a store and sitting down in the front to buy a pair of shoes, instead of at the rear, where women of her race were expected to sit.” He cited the story of how 3.500 employes of the Chrys.er corpora tion in Detroit went on strike be cause the "management made the mistake to employ Negroes on the job with whites." Referring to the riots in Detroit and New York, he said that inasmuch as Mayor La- Guardia has denied that a riot ex isted in the latter city no white man's life was safe on the streets of Harlem without police guard during that time. Hitting at what he termed “hy phenated Americans" for their ir responsible actions and attitude, those who are attempting to make over our country according to the patterns of government from which they came. The young hero referred to the far Eastern front as proof that race prejudice is harmful to the war ef fort and victory. “Of course the necessities of the war in the East have forced a cer tain change in the outlook where old prejudices are concerned,” he pointed out. (Editor’s Note: Britain’s military defeat in the far East has been at tributed to her haughty policy of “white supremacy.”) Efforts to assure the natives of friendliness were made and no American soldier was permitted to make uncomplimentary remarks about them, nor violate their cus toms and traditions, Thompson said. the nation** churches and church leaders their responsibility to save the country by adhering to Chris tian principles. “There still exists a critical, sus picious. often hostile body of in dividuals among church members who don’t practice the tolerance we hear preached," he said.
