(ANP) - The National Urban League was asked by President William Green of the American Federation of Labor to submit to him immediately its idea of the type machinery which should be established within the AFL de signed ultimately to secure full recognition of and status for the Negro worker as an integral part of the labor movement Green promised to lay the pro posal before the mid-winter meet ing of the federation’s executive council which was scheduled to convene in Miami on Monday, and to give it his support This comes probably as the out standing development growing out of the hour and a half long con ference which executives of eight branches of the league and officials of the national office held here on Wednesday with Green. At the con clusion of the meeting separate Race Medics To Hold Meeting In St Louis ORANGE. N. J. (ANP> An nouncement has been made by Dr. W G. Alexander, chairman of the board of trustees, that the 1944 ses sion of the National Medical asso ciation will be held in St. Louia beginning Tuesday. Aug. 15 The invitation to meet in this place was extended by the Mound City Med ical society. It had been formerly ndicated that this meeting would be held in Atlanta, but as 1945 will mark the 50th anniversary. It was decided to postpone the meeting in Atlanta until next year. Granger "affirmed" Green’s re marks and asserted that for the past 25 years the league has encouraged Negroes to identify themselves with organixed labor. “We are continu ing to do so," he added, "playing no favorites, but just urging Negro workers to join a reputable organi zation. We will never recommend that Negroes accept inferior status in organized Labor. We shall con tinue to fight against any union, local or international, that refuses that status. In doing so. we are fighting not against but for the AFL upon the grounds on which it is founded." The conference grew out of cer tain disparaging remarks which President Green had made about the Urban League and the NAACP during debate on anti-d;scrimina tion resolutions at the federation’s convention last fall. The league took exception and so informed Green, and asked for a conference to discuss the whole question of organizing Negroes into the labor movement. A two-hour delsy in the start of thi conference occurred as a result of a hurry-up meeting that Presi dent Roosevelt had called on the same day with Green and Philip Murray, president, CIO, to discuss a national service act.
