N.Y.—Twelve prom inent Americans, .ill of whom had .served a.s member.' of the executive board of the National Urban League for 25 years or more, were guests of honor at a family party in the Aldme club last Tuesday evening. Approximately one hundred per sons gathered to indicate their ap preciation of the services rendered to the league, and to the cause of better living in America. William H. Baldwin, president of the Natonal Urban League, an nounced to the assembled guests the creation of a TWO FRIENDS AWARD, which will go each year to two persons, one Negro and one Supreme Court Decision Upholds Segregation Act WASHINGTON, DC.— (NNPA) — The Supreme Court's ruling in re fusing to review the case of Win fred Lynn, of New York, who claimed he was unlawfully induct ed into the army under a "Negro quota" has sounded the death knell to efforts to test army segregation under the Selective Service Act, ac cording to Garfield Hayes, general counsel of the American Liberties Union, and counsel for Ly in. The court, in ruling on the re ouest for review of the case said: •The cause is moot, it appearing that the petitioner is no longer in the respondent's custody " In effect, this means the army Mayor (Continued from Page 1) The letter said further that while the work of intcr-rac.al and inter cultural oi gamzations had been helpful in enlarging the tield of un derstanding. "the public utterances of a few vocal white and Negro leaders had stifTened the attitudes of other groups who. to say the least, are anything but tolerant." The Commission commended the Board of Education for the steps it had taken in promoting good will. It urged that adequate facilities be provided for the training of Negro nurses and post-giaduaie study lor Negro doctors. The commission recommended further that additional Negroes be appo nted to the police and an increase in social studies in the police training curriculum. Attention was drawn to the prob lem of over crowding and pu>hing on public ti ansportation and in loading zones. It was advised that uniformed directors of leading zones should be employed to keep down milling and thus avoid vio lence because of frayed tempers. It was further recommended that recreational facilities .n tnc city be increased to take care of the needs of the citaens It was emphasized that the re >iponsibili'y for better race ie.at.on resLs as much on the citizens of a g \en community as the govern ment “It will be necessar.v for ihe committee to get in contact with people of sober judgment in ordei that their influence can be used to away the larger group in the right d.rcction The need for additional sites for housing was emphasized with the man insistence that the present do\elopm»nt at F.;)£ht M.le road a»e nsulhc ent for’ the need* of the Ne gro population.
