SATURDAY, AUGUST 5, 1944 NAIL ‘COTTON ED' DEFEAT IN S.C. WASHINGTON. D. C-The de feat of Senator Elligon D ( ‘Cotton Ed") Smith in the South Carolina Democratic primary last week was flailed In the nation’s capital by Informed political observers as a Earning to Congressmen that ca reers built on "race baiting" can not survive. Negroes, however, take little eomfoil in his successor. Gov. Olin D. Johnson, who. judging from past performances, sees eye to eye with Senator Smith on his "white su premacy" views. The repudiation of the 80-year eld dean of the Senate who was bidding for his seventh term is no minor political incident. Long op posed to the New Deal, a cham pion for "white supremacy" and states sovereignty, he has been uncompromising in shouting his hatred whenever he could get any one to listen. His rabid views, his senility, his lack of sufficient or ganized political backing spelled his doom. Walked Out On Prayer Tn the 1936 National Democratic Convention held in Philadelphia, ••Cotton Ed" Smith stalked out of the convention when the Reverend Marshal Shepherd, pastor of the Olivet Baptist church, at that time also a member of the Pennsylvania State legislature, was called on tr> give the prayer opening one of the sessions. He would not be "in sulted' by having to listen to a Ne gro minister pray. As chairman of the Senate Agri cultural Committee, he devoted the greater part of his time pushing cotton, the principal crop of South Carolina, raised by highly under paid farm hands, predominantly Negroes, into the counc.ls of the nation. While Governor Johnson conduct ed a pro-Roosevelt campaign, he admitted that he disagrees with the President on "certain domestic po’.i c.es." Johnson s resentment of the Supreme Court ruling which estab lished the rights of Negroes to par ticipate in Democratic primaries is te*t shown by h s blatant denunci ation of the decision. Takes Anti-Ballot Action In a week-long special session of the South Carolina legislature called by the governor in May. South Carolina wiped her bonks clean of approximately 170 refer ences to s’ate primar.es in an ef fort to forestall any legal action which might perm.t Negroes' par ticipation. It i- understood tha* the 4R-yrar e’.d governor of South Car lina had tne support of iaoo: .r. his cam paign. Commmenting on h.s defeat. Sen ator Smith said. 'lf this election meets the approval of a majority of the qualified \oters of South Carolina. I ab.de by the r decision." Southern Educators End Ohio State Workshop COLUMBUS.
