Urge Johnson For Big Veteran Bureau Position Bv IIAKKY MiAI.PIN WASHINGTON. 1) C. - < N’NPAi —The proposal to place a Negro in the Veterans administration, where tiic handling of tiie welfare of re turning veterans will b* concen trated under the (il Bill of Rights and ottu;r veteran legislation, is catching on l.kr the prairie Are. Tiie Negro press, leaders and organiza tions are insisting that such a rep resentative should not bi a “race illations adviser," but an assistant administrator. The NNPA has learned that con siderable influential strength is be ,ng put behind the urg ng of Col. Camj bell C. Johnson for the post. Col. Johnson is not an applicant. He is unaware, probably, that his name is being suggested. But there is a general concensus that no other per son is better qualified by experience and temperament for the job. Col. Johnson has been an assistant to Gen. Hershey in the Selective Service System almost from the in ception of that program. He has don? a most acceptable job, much of which cannot be divulged until after the war. His alertness, interest, and championing of the cause of Negroes however, is known in offi cial and informed circles. Because of t!u? many sociological and employment problems winch will be involved in the handling of the Veterans’ welfare :n the process of do i obilizution and afterward, Col Johnson's experience in Y.MCA work, and his long history of activi ty in social weltare and civic work make him an ideal choice, .t is held The NNPA has let.rned from a reliable source that the proposal for the appointment of an Assistant Ad min strator in the Veterans Admin istration will be made to the Presi dent, and that Col. Johnson's name a ill be recommended to rill the posit.on when it is created. Such an appoii tmert, if it ma terializes, may make Col Johnson (livible for promotion to the rank of brigad rr general in the Army. Chicago W o ni a n To Atlanta Univ. D C (NNPA) The contribution of American Ne groes to the winning of the war was dramatized over a national hookup of NBC last Saturday even ing. in a program "They Call Me Joe ” Central theme of the story was developed -around the work of the famed 97th Engineers, who built a road through a continent of forest."
