Ga, who haa refused to carry out the War Department's directive banning dis crimination in Post Exchanges, the atres, etc, was requested by the NAACP in a letter to Under Secre tary of War Robert Patterson, on Sept. 26. In hij communication, pointing out also similar Instances fn other southern areas, Walter White. NAACP secretary, said. “By way of quotations in the public press, as well as by direct communications from Negro soldiers at Fort Ben ning, Ga., who heard him, we have learned that Col. J. P. Edgerly, commanding officer at the Recep tion center there, has clearly dem onstrated his unwillingness to exe cute the provision of Memorandum No. 97. In his lecture to the Negro soldiers, he not only threatened them with reprisals if they acted in accord with the Memorandum, but following the same, he instruct ed that all copies of the Memoran dum be removed from bulletin boards throughout the Negro sector “The Articles of War provide for the punishment of enlisted men who disobey military orders. Are we to suppose that Colonel Edger ly's conduct is not governed by the same? This officer is not alone in his alleged disregard for Memo randum No. 97 We understand that commanding officers at Fort Knox, Ky , Gndman Field. Ky., Hendricks Field, Florida, and Fort Riley, Kan sas. follow a similar pattern of behavior. “Already the un-American treat ment of Negro soldiers has created a w'ave of resentment throughout the nation. The widespread know ledge that Post Commanders are misconstruing Memorandum No. 97 to the detriment of Negro soldiers will serve to intensify this deplor able situation. “This association urges that your office make a complete investiga tion of Colonel Edgerly with the view of using strong disciplinary measures. We further urge that widespread publicity be released with reference to such disciplinary action as may be taken in order that other commanders of like mind will be convinced that War De partment memoranda mean what they say.” Holds Youth, 17 In Murder Case At Examination By LARRY CHISM “Rose, I killed Mr. Evans, but I didn’t intend to,” were the words used by a young married woman to describe what had happened a few minutes after 17-year-old Ralph Sawyer had fatally shot Robert Evans, apartment house owner sev eral weeks ago. Rosella Wasson, 23-year-old moth er of a small child and wife of a serviceman, a police witness, under a SIO,OOO bond, testified at the ex amination of Sawyer last week in the court of Recorder’s Judge John P. Scallen. Had 2 Fight# She testified that Sawyer of 1533 Trombley, accused of first degree murder in the fatal shooting of Robert Evans. 62, of 317 Laßelle, Highland Park, was involved in two fights with Evans on the day of the slaying. The young witness stated that Evans had ordered her to move from his apartment building at 271 Westminister “because she had too much company and made too much noise.” This reportedly led up to a fight between Evans and Sawyer and several other youths. “I stopped the first fight,” she testified. “Saw yer and the others got into a car and drove away.” Youth Gets Gun She added, that a short time later she was in the car when Sawyer came out of an Osborne Place ad dress and gave her a gun which he told her to keep. “It had to be done,” she quoted Sawyer as saying as he drove the car back to the Westminister ad dress and fatally shot Evans who was standing alongside his auto in front of his apartment. Later, the witness stated Sawyer as saying he did not intend to kill Evans, who died a short time after the shooting. Judge Scallen held Sawyer for trial on a first degree murder charge and remanded him without bail to the county jail. Why be satisfied when you may make so much more money the H.-Hat EASY WAY.
