The clinic work is an orientation course which allow* the prospective therapud.at to become acquainted %v;th therapy and the college to de termine the applicants ability Dr. Lord told M;*s Stewart that there w as need for Negro girls in the field •nd that he did not want to d.a eourage her. M..ss Stewart stated he referred her to the resident physical thera pist, Mia T.mey, who Informed her that she eould get the theory but not the clinical work. The reason given wes that the college had not made for Negroes in the clinics. Miss Stewart waa ad v.sed to take the theory and later transfer to another school for the clinical part of the course. The cur riculum selected by Miss Stewart d.d not include a clinic course, al though white students enrolled af ter aha did, were sent to clinics. In e letter to Dr. Munson, presi dent of Michigan State Normal College. Gloster B. Current, exec sit ve secretary NAACP. declared that there is no reason for “unusual treatment or special consideration" in Mis* Stewart's case. The NAACP communication pointed out that *:he college has a responsibility to rake available equal facilities to ■ll student* regardless of race or color, and thu should not entail •ny special difficulty."
