Tnskegee’s biasing halfback of the early 1920’5, but very tittle, if anything, has been said about the guy who cleared the path as the flying Tiger roared to touch downs. This stalwart of the grid iron is Ernest Bailey, now exerting his efforts toward assisting Hesd Coach Cleve Abbott in coaching Tuskegee football eleven. What Britton was to Red Grange when the Galloping Ghost was blazing a trail to national fame and acclaim, as he brushed aside would-be tacklers. that’s what Bailey was to Blazing Ben. open ing holes with his 195 pounds of hard muscle and brawn. Bailey was a member of the Tuskegee teams from 1924 to 1927. while Stevenson cut capers on the gridiron at Tuskegee from 1923 to 1930, the first three years as a high school player. Cosch Abbott, who is now In his twenty-fifth year as head mentor at Tuskegee. was riding the wave of success during those halcyon years of the 1920’5, his teams main taining an unsullied record from 1924 to 1928. tying two games. The greatest team of that period was that of 1926. a team that had such stars as Stevenson. Bailey, Paul ! Smith, and Woodtn In the back fleld. The line was composed of Owen Duncan and Ike Robinson at the ends: Cornelius Robinson snd Ashton Kitchen as the tackles; Bill Jennings and Addle Moore, guards, and Oscar Tad lock, one of Tuskegee’s immortals, at renter. It was during the season of 1926 that Stevenson gave one of his greatest exhibitions of gridiron performances. Tuskegee was play ing Lincoln «Pa > university in Franklin Field in Philadelphia, and on the first play Ben. w.th Bailey brushing aside would-be tacklers. broke through the Lincoln defense and raced 85 yards for a touch down. He converted the extra point. A short time later he kicked two field goals before dashing through the Lincoln team for 35 yards and another touchdown. He again con verted the extra point. Tuskegee won 20-0, and Stevenson made all of the markers. Red Grange was in the grand stand. and after the game came down on the field and congratulat ed Stevenson for his great per formance. Later Ben. realising the import ant part Bailey had played in his achievements, slapped the husky teammate on the hack, telling him that It was only behind his bril liant efforts that he was able to score touchdowns. Stevenson is now living in Hous ton. Tex, Those who saw him rare up and down the field in those golden days, like to recall his great performances, and Bailey is in cluded in that group.
