Specking on a radio program in the interest of the PAC, Sheffield, well known Detroit labor leader, declared that Negroes in Michigan are bitter in their resentment •gainst the alliance which the Re publican party has made with the poll tax politicians. Insincere Propaganda "In spite of voluminous and in sincere Republican propaganda, Negroes in Michigan, along with white workers and liberals of Michigan are going to place their state in the column of liberalism,’ 1 Sheffeld said. The deceased was identified es Isham Smith of 1013 Benton street. He was admitted to Receiving hos pital for a lacerated forehead and possible skull fracture. He died two days later at the hospital. Police learned that Smith went ♦o Bleep, sharing a part of the bed with a man he knew as Johnnie Jones. Smith told police that he was awakened when he was struck on the head and that he had seen Jones taka his billfold and his miss ing money. Bryant, grand trustee, representing the Grand Lodge, and B. V. Gregory, antler, representing the State Association of Elks. The Elk leaders agreed to launch a city-wide 60-day drive for mem bers. to open November 1, and will continue until January 1, 1945. Jo Ann, the oldest child of Pvt. and Mrs. Fred Hicks told her mother that sha had found the war bond while playing in an alley at the rear of their home. Gets Reward The market owner gave Jo Ann four dollars as a reward for find ing and returning the SI,OOO war bond to him. Asked what Jo Ann had done with the money, Mrs. Ruth Glover, a neighbor of the Hicks’, stated that the small girl had purchased ten war savings stamps and had bought ice cream and cake ,for her four younger brothers and a sister. ' It was disclosed that the bond finder is a first grade student at Maybee school, near Lynn and Car doni. The Hicks’, the Chronicle was informed, have recently moved in and atartad housekeeping in one of the governments temporary homes on Cameron street. Tuskegee Alumni Presents Speaker The Detroit dub of the Tuskegee Alumni will open its program year, October 29. 5:30 pm. at the resi dence of Mr. and Mrs. James Hark lass, 583 Hague avenue. The speaker will be James E. McCall, editor of the Detroit Tri bune. His subject will be: “The Part that the Alumni Must Play in the Community in Shaping the Post-War World.” Chairman of tt% program com mittee, Fred W. POLICE RAID CLUB, ARREST 22 YOJUTHS Members of the club and their guests from Wilbarforce and Tuskegee were arrested last Friday, Oct. 20 arid held fdjr several hours at Canfield station and at police headquarters, the NAACP was informed this week by tW» club president, Clarence Morgan, 23. of 101 Orchestra place. , The NAACP learned that a crowd of youths had gathered at the clubhouse, 83 E. Willis street, to attend a party given in honor of Charles Anderson, son of Fred A. Anderson, funeral director, who is a student at Wllberforce. An derson and his guests, many of whom lived in the neighborhood, and who are employed here, were denied entrance to the club when they arrived—at approximately the same time, as the policemen— were unable to join in on the party. It was disclosed that the youths were released on Saturday with no charges preferred against them by the police. However, ft was learnd, that Morgan vFag served with a violation notice for an alleged illegal sale of beverage on the premise. Break op Clubhouse Club members disclosed that on their return to the clubhouse the/ found furniture broken and the place considerably damaged by the police. The club denied that liquor was sold on the premises and stated that pop and hot dogs were given to the guests aa re freshments. According to Morgan, Edgar Stroud. Johnny Lones, Eugene Moore and Richard McKissack. the club was organised about two years ago to combat juvenile de linquency by furnishing entertain ment for its members and juve niles in the community. The club house was furnished at a cost of $250. for which the members pay weekly dues of one dollar each. Morgan disclosed that gf v en girls, two from Wilberforce, who had come over for the Wilber force-Tuskegeeigame. among those arrested in the twenty-two taken to Canfield station last Friday, were later released.
