SATURDAY, APRIL 28, 1945 Delta Luncheon Rally Hears Of Girls’ Home By GLADYS MILLS The Spring Luncheon Rally, last Saturday afternoon, sponsored by Delta Sigma Theta sorority was a social as Well as a civic highlight.. The affair was planned specifically for the purpose of giving to the public a progress report on the Delta Home for problem girls. Speakers representing the major social agencies were present. The real dramatic and exciting note was the appearance of Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer’s glamorous star, Lena Horne. Miss Horne, in addi tion to what she added in the way of beauty and glamor, made a real contribution in the brief talk she gave. Mrs. Slaton Presides Roberta McGuire and Jessie Sla ton made a dynamic team, the one giving very detailed remarks about the history of the Delta Dream, and the latter making a really ex cellent mistress of ceremony. Speakers included John C. Dancy, Miss Eleanor Hutzel of the Wom en's Division of the Police depart ment, Rev. Charles Hill, Mrs. Jane Bestard. Gloster Current. Dr. Doris Cline of Wayne university. Judge D. J. Healy and Mose Walker. Lena Horne brought things to a temporary standstill when she made her entrance with Thelma Hutchins. She looks Just as love ly as she does in her pictures, and of course the word has somewhat preceded her actual appearance, so that eager eyes awaited her en trance and followed her to the speakers’ table. She was beautifully dressed in • kelly green gabardine suit, with which she wore a very severely, tailored green* shirt flecked with some shadow design in black, over this she had casually through her lush nnnk coat. Her hair was in an upsweep atfd she wore no hat. It was thoughtful of Katherine Wells to have the spotlight put on when she went to the microphone, because we were all of us dying for a good IVk. She was very poised and at ease as she went to the microphone after a very lovely build up introduction by Mrs. Sla ton. Miss Horne gave a very in telligent. well worded and straight to the po.nt talk on the current subject of the home for delinquent girls. She was charming, that is really the only word to describe her, and she left us all more proud and in love with her than before. Handsome JSSHm J I) *1 k*a*»r wlvM *<*a mwiri t«r.
