La Porte, Ind., Sept. 6.—James Chance of Starke county, who lost his life two •weeks ago while fighting a fire that threatened the destruction of valuable property, was betrothed to Miss Gueta Gites, aged 13 years. The day of his funeral she vowed that she would take her own life. Miss Gites made all plans for her funeral and last night she took poison, "which caused her death. . EYE ON THE ORIENT Important Meeting of Roads in the Harriman Syndicate. CHICAGO FULL OF OFFICIALS Many Secret Sessions and the Air Rife With Talk «.i Oriental Trade. Chicago, Sept. —'It was learned to-day that since last Monday the working heads of every road embraced In the Harriman syndicate have been holding secret ses sions In Chicago, and these meetings are to continue until the end of next week. Among the officials present are: ' J. C. Stubbs, general traffic manager of the Union Pacific, Southern Pacific and Central Pacific systems. E. O. McConnick, general passenger traffic manager of the Southern Pacific. E. L. Loruax, general passenger agent of the Union Pacific. Benjamin Campbell, general traffic man | ager of the Oregon Railway & Navigation company. A. L. Craig, general passenger agent of the same road, and D. E. Burley, general passenger agent of the Oregon Short Line. All of these officials brought with them •their stenographers and secretaries, and are quartered at the Auditorium annex. None of them is registered, and the great est secrecy has been preserved concern ing their movements. When it became known in railroad, cir cles that the meeting was being held it was said that its object was to start a vigorous campaign for the purpose of bringing to the Pacific coast and from there to the eastern centers of commerce every dollar's worth of traffic that can be diverted to this country from the orient. E. O. MeCormick, general passenger j traffic manager of the Southern Pacific, said: \r"ij '■•*.-. ■ . ,- The little stream that started across the Pacific practically with the opening of the Philippine campaign la beginning to increase to such an extent that it wil rapidly develop into a mighty river. We believe that we have made such provision for this magnificent trade as will at least take care of its beginnings. We have the Ocicdeutal and Oriental line of steamers, the Pacific Mail and the Japanese ! line, and vessels the equal of any on the At lantic ocean will soon be added to each of i these fleets. Our agents are now traveling all : through the orient seeking trade in every city and hamlet and planting the seed of what we believe soon will be a vast and rapidly in creasing commerce. EXTRA G. K. TRAINS To Carry Fair Visitors Home-Re duced Miunetonka Service. On acount of the great tide of travel homeward that has already set in,. the I Great Northern announces two special trains to-night for the west. One on the Breckenridge division leaves the union station at 9 p. m. this evening and runs as far as Breckinridge. One on the Fergus Falls division leaves at 7:40 p. m. an>| runs as far as Barnesville. Next Wednesday the 'Great Northern will reduce its summer Minnetonka ser vice so as to run but three trains daily each way. The schedule has not yet been issued buy there will be a train out in; the morning and two in the evening, at 5:05 and 6:10 p. m. Returning there will be two trains in the morning and one in the afternoon. On Saturdays and Sundays there will be an extra out leaving at 2 p. m. The full announcement will be made later. GREAT WESTERN'S ANNUAL Several Small Roads Merged During the Year. The Great Western issued its annual report yesterday. It gives gross receipts from all sources as $7,013,861, increase $292,824; operating expenses, $4,831,515, in crease $341,292; taxes, $204,000; net earn ings, $1,978,346, decrease $48,467; gross re • ceipts per mile, $7,545, increase $315; oper [ ating expenses per mile, $5,197, increase i $367; net earnings per mile, $2,128, de- J i crease $52; percentage of operating ex -1 penses to earnings, 68, increase 2. The same conditions govern the [ taking over of the Red Wing & Southern , , and Winona & Western roads. Will Vestibule S. P. San Francisco. Sept. 6.—Under orders from E. H. Harriman, the regular passenger trains over the Southern Pacific from end to end will be entirely vestibuled within sixty days. Wabash Stands Oat. St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 6.—General Passenger Agent Crane of the Wabash has notified Chairman McLeod of the Western Passenger association that the Wabash no longer con siders itself bound by the ruling of Arbitrator Martin in the matter of rates to be charged from Kansas City to Buffalo and points east thereof by its fast mail train via Hannibal. Railroad Notes. The Wisconsin Central Railway company was yesterday granted a permit to construct a freighthouse in St. Paul, which is esti mated to cost $63,000. Sir William C. Van Home, chairman of the Canadian Pacific directory, predicts that the grain crop in the Canadian northwest will reach a total of 100,000 000 bushels. This, he says, will allow the farmers a surplus for export trade. H. W. Brown, traveling freight agent for the North-Western line, vith headquarters at Helena, Mont., has been appointed district freight agent in the twin cities. D. H. He declined to be interviewed MELANCHOLY FATE Discoverer of the Navel Oranges Goes to the Poorhouse. lr'm York Stan Speoial Stria* Riverside, Cal., Sept. 6.—Luther Tib betts, the originator of th© famous navel orange, which has produced much wealth in Southern California, has been taken to the Riverside county poorhouse to spend the remainder of his days. Mr. Tibbetts once possessed considerable wealth, but lost it all, and for a few years past has been practically penniless. Taylors Falls, Minn., Sept 6.—At the election of officers of the Saint Croix toll bridge, there was a lively scramble for the position of toll collector. Mrs. Nellie Day, the Minneapolis stockholder and director, secured the re-election of her can didate. One applicant, living on a farm near the home of an aged and wealthy director, has found it convenient to give said director a ride home every day for a year. As the accommodating farmer" applicant failed to get a vote, the director^w has to walk home nights. Captain Ed Root's wife had secured a personal pledge from a majority of the directors, but failed of election. The bridge is owned by a private corporation, but the elections are as uncertain as a political gathering. A semi-annual dividend of $3.50 for a share of $25 was declared. Humboldt, lowa, Sept. 6.—Parley Finch of this town has purchased the Goose Pond land at Wall Lake, lowa, for $30 an acre. He intends to ditch and tile the land, which contains 900 acres, and also spend about $4,000 in improvements. The former owner of this property paid about $5 an acre, and at that time it was covered with water. For the last five years hay has been cut every year, and it can be rented for $1.50 to $2 an acre. Mr. Finch is a wealthy men and owns much lowa land, and will undoubtedly make a good thing out of the deal. Doheny of Los Angeles, are the directors and principal stockholders of the Inter-Mountain Oil company, which is capitalized at $10,000,000 and which has been formed for the purpose of developing a large tract of valuable oil lands In the Fossil fields south of Kemmerer, in the southwestern part of the state.
