Baden-Powell, the hero of Mafeking, who
has been in this country several weeks
traveling incognito, examining the cav
alry of the United States army, sailed for
England on the Celtic yesterday. ~ Speak
ing of the results of his
General Powell said: ^ "As a. whole, the
American cavalry arm does not come up
to the highwater mark of the British
branch of the service. I am not giving
vou a prejudiced view when I say I saw
many things in* which your cavalry beats
us but as a whole I must repeat that we
are superior. The physique of your men
is below the standard of British cavalry.
A more rigorous and better system of
gymnastic exercises, I think, is needed
here, and also less luxury in the matter
of food. The foods which your cavalry
men are given each day are far too high
ly seasoned. Plain but substantial food,
with no coffee and tea, only occasionally,
combined with a thoro course of gym
nastic exercises andk a salt bat
- every day In' *
is what the British cavalryman goes thru
in order to keep himself in perfect
physical condition.
Your cavalry have not as yet had a good
opportunity, such as we had In the Boer
war, to show their staying powers in a se-
vere campaign. I am inclined to think
that if the chance ever comes to your
mounted regulars the present mode of
diet will tell th* tale in an enormous stck
list. Your cavalry horses, on the other
hand, are perfection and their like can
not be equaled in any other country."

Two Heat Prostrations Occurred in
the Big City Yesterday.

New York. April 30.Two heat pros
trations and an amount of bodily dis
comfort that beats the memory of the old
est inhabitant marked yesterday as one
of the hottest days at this season of the
year for a quarter of a century. Not in
all that time has there occurred such a
hot April 29. It was more like the tem
perature that Is expected to arrive here
about July 4. The mercury at 4 p. m.
reached 83.
It wag just as sudden as it was unwel
come. The air seemed charged with heat
waves. The wind died to a calm and the
sun climbed to meridian in a cloudless
sky. The whole city sweltered in heat.
Jesse Gold, an electrician at work on a
new apartment house at Broadway and
One Hundred and Second street, col
lapsed from the heat at home. So did
Allossi Morris, a pantryman in the Wal
dorf.
Gold was revived and resumed his work,
but Morris had to be removed to the Ne w
Tork hospital and given a liberal appli
cation of ice.

son was Bbot and killed by tier husband at
Henderson last night. The husband leveled a
shotgun at her brother. Frank Cronkhite, in a
quarrel, and she jumped between the two. men
and received the full charge. Both men are

Boston, April 30.Fire at the Abattoir plant
in Brighton to-day caused a loss of $150,000 to
$1.75,000. A building used by John S. Kelly &
Co. for the slaughtering and dressing of sheep,
a small butter factory and other buildings were
burned. Four' firemen were hurt, but not seri
ously. . .
