ft 14 RAILROADS . FJST OHES TO STAY ,|T$w Passenger Schedules to Chi A ( cago Please the Public and Will Stand. The Chicago Great Western May Cut Time to Twelve Hours Flat- &' Chicago, July 2.It is announced by officials of the Great Western railway that ,t he experiment of running a fast train from the twin cities to Chicago had been -successful. Discussion of the reductions In time which four of the principal lines between Chicago and the northwest have made recently, has disclosed the fact that the fast schedules are likely to remain in for ce permanently. While the Great Western has not reduced the running time north-bound, It is not certain that it will not ultimately do so . While there have been reports of causes leading up to these reductions in pas senger train time, the real reason Is said by passenger traffic officials to be found in the demand of the traveling public for the more rapid service. The passenger departments of Chicago roads report that this faster service is being appreciated by travelers, and as long as this is the case the fast trains are likely to keep up the speed. The Great Western may cut the time from the twin cities to Chicago to 12 hours fiat. 4 . Q. N.'S NEW DISTRICT It Will Include the Mesaba & Superior Di visions. The Great Northern issued a circular to-day abolishing the Eastern district and creating a Lake district. Divisions known as No. 1 and No. 2, making up this dis trict, will be known as Mesaba & Su perior divisions. The new lake district is made up of the fololwing lines: Cook Creek Junction to Duluth, Boylston to Cass Lake, Brookston to Ellis, Saunders to Allouez, Swan river to iVrginia, and the branch lines on the Mesabi range. The Superior division of the lake dis tri ct will extend from Duluth to Coon Creek Junction and the Mesabe division will consist of the lin es west of Royalston. D. M . Philbin, assistant general super intendent of the Great Northern, is in charge of the new lake district, with headquarters at Superior, and J. M . Davis has been appointed superintendent of both the Superior and Mesabi divisions. His headquarters will also be at Superior. '*:"[ Articles of incorporation for the West ern Pacific Construction company, with a capital of $30,000,000, were filed yesterday. This is the first formal step taken by the "Western Pacific Railway company to es tablish a new line into San Francisco. The capital stock is said to be fully, sub scribed. The opinion is held in San Fran cisco that Gould interests are back of the Western Pacific road and that its con struction will form an outlet to the Pacific coast for the Denver & Rio Grande. The. Western Pacific company is projecting the Beckwith Pass Transcontinental li ne to Salt Lake. ~ Heavy Traffic to Continne. Twin city lines are compiling reports for the fiscal year ending June 30. The coast lines will have reports out In six weeks while the Chicago line reports will come in in August. The only report available to-day was one from the Great Western and was only semiofficial, however. An executive officer of one of the coast lines said yesterday: "There is nothing in present conditions that gives rise to any doubt of the continuance of . heavy traffic. Our trains are carrying full loads and other lines that deliver freight to us are evidently taking care of about all the business their equipment is ccpable of handling. "Freight business in the west is heavy, and on a solid basis. In Minnesota and the states sur rounding, everything stems to indicate that the next year will be a repetition of the past with perhaps an even larger business." Railroad Earnings in United States. For the year ending June 30, 1903, the gross earnings from the operation of the railroads in the United Stales, arising from the operation of 200,154.66 miles of line, were $1,726,380 267, being an increase of $137,854,230 over 1902. The - passengers carried during the year as shown by the annual reports of the railroads were 649,878,- 505, an increase for the year of 42,600,384. $40,000,000 Issue Authorized. New York, July 2.The directors of the San Pedro & Los Angeles, Senator W. A. Clark's road, have, authorized the issue of $40,000,000 of bonds for the purchase of the branch of the Oregon Short Line from Salt Lake City to- Cali- entes. The deal will be completed to-day. The fihort Line will receive cash for its property. Advance for Trainmen. _yncoln, Neb., July 2.The Burlington train, M l hate succeeded in securing an increase of wages of 12 per cent for passenger men- and 15 per cent for the freight department. This is the secoiid raise within a year and was granted by the company without much protest. Just "Superior" Now. As the result of federal and railroad action the only names of the four towns of Superior recognized in the new folders are "Superior' and "Old Superior," the latter, however, Is called Nettleton avenue. Railroad Notes. J. M. Maxwell of Dallas, Texas, has been ap pointed assistant general manager of the Mis souri. Kansas & Texas railroad. Robert A. Conolly, the man who laid out the route of the North-Western railway between Chi cago and Milwaukee, died at Waukegan Tuesday. He was 73 years of age. Besides laying out the toute of the road, Mr. Conolly also laid out the yards in Milwaukee. The position of assistant general passenger agent of the Rock Island lines west of the Mis sissippi river, held for several years by E. W. Thompson, has been abolished. Mr. Thompson resigned to engage in other business. The juris diction of W. J. Leahy, assistant general passen ger agent of the Rock Island lines east of the Missouri river, has been extended over the lines west of the river. A conference of passenger officers of the Rock Island, the San Francisco, the Chicago & East ern Illinois and the Choctaw, Oklahoma & Gulf lines was held yesterday and the consolidation of the 'Frisco and the Choctaw passenger and freight offices in Memphis effected. This is the first official move in the actual absorption of the 'Frisco by the Rock Islnd. No other diseases so absolutely demand diag nosis and treatment by a skilled specialist as do those of the Rectum and Intestines. The general practitioner can give only casual study to Rectal and Intestinal ills. He cannot thoroughly understand- their nature. He treats the symptoms, not the disease.
