EXPORTERS DESPERATE
Eastern Grain Business Is at a Stand-
. -- stillConference With Rail
way Men Coming.
-Bpeolal to The Journal.
Philadelphia, Sept. 2.Grain exporters
iand steamship men are looking forward to
|a conference of the committee of the
'Baltimore chamber of commerce, one from
the Philadelphia exchange and the gen
eral traffic managers of eastern railroads,
but say that only a prophet could fore
tell the result.
"For two years past," said an exporter,
"things have been going from bad to
worse in the grain business. Philadelphia
freight rates are now double what they
were two years ago. The grain business
here is at a standstill and the situation
is getting as bad as possible, for every
thing depends on the sweet will of the
railroads.
"If this state of things continues much
longer, the grain export trade here will
be dead. Vessels sailing from here are
hurt, too, and the railroads owning in
terests in some lines plying between Phila
delphia and Baltimore and foreign ports.
"Already several steamships have been
taken off here and the shipping as well
Ios the grain intersets will he killed if
I something is not done. It rests with the
railroads. They know what they can do.
They hold the remedy and that is to meet
.the Canadian rates, which are 3 cents
cheaper. Whether or not they will do
'this Is a question."

.George G. Feldman created a sensation in

The cause for the announcement was
Ignatz Bedwarwacz's plea of guilty to a
charge of whipping his wife. Upon learn
ing the facta of the case Judge Feldman
i*ald:
"I shall not send you to Jail, because
'your wife and babies are in need of your
support and are now waiting for you in
i(their little home, but if I had the power
II would instruct an officer to tie you to
[a post and lash you with a cat~o'-nine-
