SISTERS OF - MERCY IN OMAHA SUED BY A FORMER MEMBER OF THE ORDER FOR $30,000V - A K '*'- _ _ ^ . ^ Special to^The Journal.4 ' 5- Omaha, Neb., Dec. 24.Miss Annie Connell of Council Bluffs to-day filed a sensational suit in the United States court here against the convent of the Sisters of Mercy in Omaha, for $30, - 000, alleging that she had been forced by the authorities at the convent to do such work that she was a physical wreck. Miss,Connell was formerly a member of the order, but some time ago secured a special dispensation from the pope to withdraw. According to her petition Mi ss Con nell became a Sister of Mercy in 1891, receiving the name of Sister Mary Luigi Gonzaga. Altho refined and delicate she was made to scrub floors and do such other hard manual labor in the convent, she alleges, that her health gave way. She says she was oft en forced to Avork eighteen to twenty hours daily. The case has at tracted much attention among Cath olic citizens. PLANS FOR CAMPAIGN President's Favorites for Secretary of Na - tional Committee and Vice President. Washington, Dee. 24.Theie seems to be no doubt that Senator Hanna and Peny S. Heath will stick together on the re - publican national committee until the convention meets next June and then re - tire together. I t is a part of the plan of the president's friends to have Louis Ar - thur Coolidge. Washington correspondent of a Ne w York newspaper, chosen to suc ceed Heath. Coolidge is the president of the Gridiron club, and he came to Wash ington, after graduati ng at Harvar d, as the private secretary of Henry Cabot Lodge of Massachusetts. H e is a close personal friend of President Roosevelt. In all the gossip about the campaign, little is said about the vice piesidentiai candidate. Nobody but Mr. Hanna seems to have made up his mind as yet on that subject. Hi s candidate, as everybody knows, is Senator Fairbanks of Indiana. The president agrees with the senator that Indiana is a good state to take the candidate from, but he has been inclined to favor the nomination of Senator Bev - endge, whose youth, vigor and enthusiasm would, he thinks, stir things up and make the "young man's ticket" a popular one. In their answ er to the order to show cause why an injunction should not issue, the respondents alleged that they had nothing to do With the operation of the Minnie Healv. Th e endeavor of the re lators was to show that while some other company may be working the mine, Mr. Heinze is really the moving spirit in the work. It is contended by Heinze that he trans ferred ceitain interests in the mine to the Hypocka Mining company, and deeds showing uoh a transfer were offered in evidence. RAILROADS. ROADS MAKE COMPLAINT Object to Heavy Expense Imposed l "Wisconsin Inquiry. The exhaustive inquiry made by the state of Wisconsin under the new ad valorem taxation is making great trouble for the Minneapolis and St. Paul lines entering Wisconsin. The inquiry is made by the state, but th r a ^ s have to stand all the expensee' of the investigation except the cost of the blanks. A tax commissioner of one of the lines says: "To furnish the information the tax commission demands is a heart-break ing task. I t will cost the railways having large mileage in Wisconsin from $15,000 to $20,000 each just to answer the questions propounded. The commission takes up each branch separately, main li ne separately," build ings and station improvements sepa rately, and wants to know the just money value for purposes of taxation. Commissioner C. F . Staples of the state railway and warehouse commis sion, said yesterday: "The exhaustive investigation pro posed will undoubtedly furnish valuable facts.
