Will Probably Be Played at Third, and Fox Will Be Kept at SecondPres ident Uaxdal of the Northern Lieague Predicts Successful Season for His Organization. Al Demontreville, a younger brother of the famous Gene Demontreville, is the latest addition to the 1904 millers. President Watkins last night received a telegram from Demont, accepting his terms. The new man is an all-around in flelder, playing second, short or third brilliantly, altho second is his favor ite place. It is likely that he will be played at third, and Captain Fox kept in his old position at second. With Oyler at short, this will give Minne apolis easily the fastest infleld in the association. Demontreville made his reputation originally in the New England league. In 1902 he batted .355 in that organ ization, and had a fielding average of .913. Last year he batted around 00 in the New England league, and after going to the St. Louis Nationals in the middle of the season, made a record of .295 in the big league. He is a left-handed hitter, and is said to be lightning fast in getting down to first. Jack Katoll, the big Teuton twirler, has been engaged to coach the Pur due university twirlers until April 1, when he will report at Champaign. President D. J. Laxdal, of the Northern league, President J. M. Lamb of the Winnipeg club, and Mr. Kent, traveling representative of the league, were in Minneapolis yesterday on bus iness connected with the organization. Mr. Laxdal expressed himself as con fident that the coming season would be the most successful ever enjoyed by the league. "The few clouds occasioned by the threat of Van Praagh of Duluth to withdraw and form an outlaw league have rolled away," he said, "and com plete harmony prevails. I think Van Praagh now is as loyal as any owner in the league. We have a strong cir cuit, the clubs are all in good hands, and I expect to see faster ball even than we had last year. I am confident now that the Northern league has come to stay. The clubs are all on a sound financial footing, and we were able to arrange a schedule which gives each club about 600 miles less travel ing than last year. The mileage has been equalized so that each club pays one-sixth of the total expense, and with this arrangement we arranged the schedule to serve the best interests of all the clubs, without the slightest friction." Mr. Lamb predicted a successful sea son for the Winnipeg club. "We have lost nearly all our fast team of last year," he said. "Bartes and Corbett jiave gone to St. Paul. Anderson and Rogers have been traded to Superior, and Duluth has secured Randall. Nev ertheless, I think Manager Egan will give us a first division team this sum mer. Everything looks rosy for the league as a whole." Joe Cantillon of Milwaukee is to get Pitcher Stricklett from Comiskey. The twirler is now with the team' at Marlin Springs and his early work has been promising. His "spit" ball is his chief claim to baseball fame. Several university ball players will be on the Superior Northern league team this year. Varco and Lieach of the Minnesota university team have been signed by Manager Cameron for the Superior team. Leach will be behind the bat and Varco will be at short stop. The third man will be Dorman, from the crack Georgetown university team. Manager Cameron, Pitcher Freeman and outfielder Spike Ander son are all old Minnesota university men. Pete Dowling, the well-known south paw, will probably not pitch for the St. Louis cardinals this year. Dow ling's mind is temporarily unbalanced and he has been sent to his home for a long rest. Manager Griffith of the New York Americans announced last night that if the New York Nationals persisted in their efforts to open in Brooklyn, the American league would revise its schedule and the Nationals would be fought with conflicting dates all along the line the entire season. A communication signed "One of the Fans," criticizing the makeup of the Minneapolis team, has been re ceived by the sporting editor of Journal. No attention will be paid to anonymous, contributions, but any of the fans who have the courage of their convictions and sign their state ments, will be able to get publicity for their opinions. IN THE PRIZE RING The date for the fight between Kid McCoy and Henry Placke, the heavyweight champion of Holland, which was first set to take place at Philadelphia on April 1, then changed to March 25, has been changed to April 5. In a match pursuit race of a half-mile, be tween Jack Munroe and Gus Ruhlin, the pugi lists, at Brooklyn, Munroe won in 2:49. Ruhlin's face showed results of- his fight with Jeffords in Philadelphia Saturday night, and he will take back to the quaker city a number of other marks received in his bout with Munroe, for he thumped the ice with various parts of his anatomy until the spectators feared the floor would give way underneath. Benny Yanger and Aurelio Herrara fonght a six-round draw at Chicago last night. The fight was hard and fast for the entire six rounds. Both men scored knockdowns in the third round.
