A. W. Hicks, living at the Metropoli
tan hotel, was passing thru the park
when he saw the girl Tiall in the path.
He summoned the police and she was
taken to the city hospital, where it was
learned that she had swallowed carbolic
acid. She was unconscious until late
last night, when she was aroused suffi
ciently to tell her name and address.
She refused to say why she had attempt
ed her life.
Persons who live near the park say
she went there in the afternoon with a
young man and that later an elderly
man came and shoved the younger one
off the seat. He then talked earnestly

Harry B. Cramer's large stock of

by a fire which broke out in the roar
of the building shortly after 9 o'clock
last evening.

firemen much difficulty in getting it
under control. When the men first en
tered the building the rooms Were filled
with the smoke and gas from the oils,
and some were nearly overcome while
working.
Mr. Cramer's stock was valued at
$4,000 and was only partly covered by
insurance. The building is owned by
the H. N. Leighton company and was
damaged about $500. A. W. Scott has
a plumbing and gasfitting shop on the
first floor, where there was some slight
damage by water.
Iran Palacat, 102 years old, Is under arrest
at Agram, Austria, for burglary.
